Hello Teddy,

As far as I know "Silent lung" refers to just before the obvious signs of lung disease. The stage before you have any noticable symptoms and yet have reduced lung function. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Take care,

Cas xx 🌷🍀

P.S. Please do not let the doctor witter away with all their jargon , do stop them and ask questions. It will certainly relieve any worries you may have. xx

It very much depends on in what context it is used. Normally it can indicate a silent area within the lung where the doctor cannot hear air flow. It could indicate some form of blockage, such as a clot, or a build up of fluid but on the other hand it could be due to something simple such as an infection. From memory there is a silent lung disease associated with asthma and other conditions. I think you need to question your Doctor for an explanation as to the reason for the x-ray and his use of the term silent lung.

Teddyd - I don’t know the answer to your interesting question but my OH, who also has asthma/bronchiectasis had a similar thing a while ago. He always has noisy lungs, that is the norm for him but on this occasion he said that he couldn’t hear and feel his breathing. I gave him his nebulizer treatment and eventually he recovered. It was most odd and I mentioned it to his consultant. She seemed concerned and advised to have him checked out at the hospital if it happened again.

More recently he had pneumonia and looking back, his chest didn’t sound too bad at all. I have known him be much worse during infective exacerbations.

If you have any further information, please update the thread.

Could be where the cells are no longer in use. I know personally from an asthmatic point of view, that if I had a problem with it and my breathing was not really discernible, then this was in the danger zone. Now with the COPD, no problem hearing me breathe. I took a video of my children playing football with their cousins in the garden and was behind some bushes. When I played it back, we were crying with laughter, as it almost had a slightly obscene feeling with my heavy breathing. I hold my breath now when videoing!
