Back from hols and new experiences!!

Well, had a great holiday and enjoyed the sun and sea for a few weeks, however had my first ever panic attack..(sympathies for anyone who have these regularly, not something I wish to repeat). Went swimming In the sea...not far but out of reach for being able to put my feet down (never again) well started to get breathless and couldn't get Back to shore without struggling...thought. I was going to drown. All I can say for the future is that Im sticking to the water of a frozen kind xx. Seeing a lung consultant for the first time on Friday and now have to accept this disease for what it is and stop pretending im ok!

Those panic attacks have a life of their own dont they ,sympathy for getting one with sea water splashing over your face ( the thought sends shivers down my spine) ,it took my a long while to be able to sort of control these attacks , I recognise my triggers for one so I avoid doing these things ,good luck for the future

I had a panic attack in the sea, only i was 20 mtrs under the waves at the time and my air had run out, that's when you find out who your real buddie is lol.

Don't be put off Skatey but maybe best to stick to your out of the water thrills unless it's the local swimming pool. :) x

I am fine thank you, though my blades are not as sharp as yours.i suppose given that the event occurred just before diagnosis it gave me a good grounding in sharing oxygen, only my buddie is a cylinder nowadays. :)x

About 15 yrs now but things take a long time to go pear shaped as long as you stay reasonably fit. :)x

I am trying lol, I've not admitted to any one other than my sister that I have copd so trying to carry on as normal for as long as possible xx

Hi Skatergirl1, I'm Maz and have been plagued with panic attacks since I was diagnosed with copd. I try very hard to avoid the things that trigger them but haven't quite mastered it yet. You just take care and keep enjoying your life and so glad you had a good holiday. X

I will not go swimming anymore for the same reason, even in a swimming pool. I am also very concerned about the chlorine used in pools too, I suspect that it will be a trigger, the smell of bleach is bad enough.

Thanks for your reply 2 greys, I will try swimming again in a pool (making sure in shallow end) but never again in the sea....xx

Hi skate girl don’t let one panic attack knock your confidence or spirit just reading your situation got my heart racing who wouldn’t have panicked then of course that would have affected your breathing 10 times worse. You haven’t come this far to back down now stake care xxxx

I had the same experience a couple of years ago and thought I was going to drown, it was terrifying. I had a problem with my heart as a result but it has recovered now thankfully. Good luck for Friday!

I get the dreaded panic attacks and they are so scary. My Consultant has prescribed half a 1mg tablet of Lorazepam daily. It's an effort in itself cutting such a tiny tablet in half. Why they don't prescribe a 0.5mg in the first place beats me. I don't take it every day as don't like anti depressants as I am not depressed I have health anxiety .I try to control them best I can by concentrating on slowing my breathing down but it can be so scary. Hope you get sorted.x Sheila.

Hi garshe I also take 0.5 m of Lorazepam daily and bought a great little machine from our local chemist which cuts tablets in half, very helpful as they are so tiny. Carole

That's interesting. Thank you Carole. I will get one as really is hard work cutting such a small tablet. Thanks
