Milk or a replacement in tea?

I am sure the answer is there somewhere but felt I would just try and get a straightforward answer.

I have switched from drinking 3 or 4 black coffees a day to drinking tea but am concerned about the milk content. Is there some type of 'milk' replacement that would keep the taste?

There is a strong possibility that I have Class 2 Diabetes so would like to also satisfy my dietary in this respect.

Alternatively do I have it wrong and the milk content of four mugs of tea would be OK?

any guidance appreciated

warm regards

I’ve no idea from a diabetes perspective but I enjoy oat milk in my tea. I’ve tried soya milk but I’m not fond of the taste.

Hope you find a solution. Xxxx

Yes, Oat Milk does appear to be the popular choice for tea and coffee.

Hi have a look at this. I know several diabetics who drink ordinary milk. If you keep it down to a little bit then I don't see why you shouldn't be ok. x

Like you I always drink black coffee. I always prefer tea but black tea is a strange taste unless you have it like the Arabic way which is quite weak but very sweet. I cannot take the sweetness so I opt for just a little milk but have strong tea. I’m sure some experimenting will find your perfect cuppa. Good luck

Have you tried earl grey tea I find milk spoils that but I do have it weak , cannot stand brewed tea

Earl grey is good but as you say you cannot have it strong or with milk. I don’t drink much of it to be fair

I've drunk black tea for years. I take the bag out immediately after adding water. And no squeezing. If the bag has been left at all it's horrid, as is tea with milk

I only drink black coffee so can't really answer but there are several non dairy milks, not only soya but also rice, oat, almond, hazelnut and coconut (not to be confused with the stuff you get in a can) Oatly Barista is supposed to be as similar to dairy milk as you can get, as is Koko milk.

I find the best soy milk is the Tesco or Aldi unsweetened, value ones. They do not have a ‘taste’ like Alpro one. They are also fortified with calcium 😀

I don't think you should worry too much about a little milk for diabetics.

If it's the sugar element you're trying to eliminate then you can get lactose (the sugar element of milk) free milk, cheese and spread.

I'm borderline diabetic so have a very low carbohydrate intake, as carbs turn to sugar in the human system.

A friend who loves her tea but won't drink dairy swears by Koko.

The general consensus is that if you drink tea with milk , low fat milk is best for diabetics. Of course as stated there are many different milks nowadays so I would try the ones with calcium in or better still what about herbal teas there are alsorts of flavours these days, another good option is dried milk as it is low in fat and fats make sugar in your body too. Good luck with finding an alternative that suits your taste.

You have been given some good advice about milks but I'm concerned about your coffee intake. Are you drinking real coffee because if so 3-4 cups has a lot of caffeine that would raise your heart rate and keep you awake if drunk later in the day?

If it's decaffeinated instant probably not an issue.

I like my cream too Redsox but I'm not a diabetic, because I worked in the NHS we were encourage to serve diabetics low fat as fat is supposed to increase sugar levels, so it was low fat milk ect. To spite my bad habits my blood pressure is average for my age , no cholestrol problems, no diabetis, just overweight causing some minor probs which are after all inherited to a major degree. A little bit of what you fancy does you good is my motto, so ice creams all round in this hot weather. :) :)

Katie I go with that. Ice creams all round . As to cholesterol levels there were reports of a doctor who knew about the problems of drains and refused them , but increased his animal fat allowance to achieve a balanced diet and his chloresterol went down to normal.

And it should be.

Now where is that ice cream

Hi Wullie I use soya milk since my chest was bad and try to cut out as much dairy as I can. It is nice in tea and coffee. My husband is diabetic but he drinks tea only with skimmed milk.
