Well, went to see doctor for first time in a year, after seeing respiratory nurse on Saturday who booked the appointment. First question, why are you here??? Then proceeded to explain outcome and result of Spiro with nurse, she recommended I have ct scan and to see if I would be suitable for valves. Every time I tried to speak and ask a question, he kept over talking me and not listening to me to the point that I got up to leave and only on opening his door did he then ask me to sit down again and then shut up and let me talk!!! He was contradicting everything the nurse had told me and my Spiro tests results which state severe obstruction, he even said emphysema is not copd!!! Anyway at long last he has agreed to refer me to a chest specialist so hopefully I will get some answers.

I had a similar experience with a GP at my local surgery, I had a chest infection a while after I had a bout of pleurisy and I said I didn't want it to turn nasty and give me another bout. He said pleurisy can't be seen on an x-ray, (the Dr at the hospital showed me my x-rays and explained where it was), he also told me I don't need to have a nebuliser, taking 5 puffs of my inhaler would be the same as a nebuliser.
I went to leave and said I was going to A&E and would tell them what he had said. He then asked me to sit down and had the surgery nurse do a nebuliser for me. I put in a complaint about him and I refused to be seen by him whenever I needed to go to the surgery.
He later returned to New Zealand and so far I have had good treatments from his replacements.

What didn't he understand about the chronic,OBSTRUCTIVE,pulmonary disease definition lol?I suppose if we have purely Emphysema in essence and probably using common sense that's what we have,but under that umbrella term we must remain until they redesign it.
Well done on getting your referral,now you will be able to take control of your own destiny and not be dependent on your indifferent G.p.

Lets hope so ski's, to date I have not been told anything other than I have copd, severe obstruction. It was mentioned that something was seen on last xray, but then told they don't know what it is because they havnt got said xray!!?? Also in 2014 xray showed inflated lungs, which could be a sign of emphysema but Nothing followed up. I have a history since a child of getting bronchitis, pnemonia, pleurisy etc so surprised it had to take me to ask them to do Spiro test and the one I had done 6 years ago read 34% in First blow then 99 on second, doctor agreed should have been followed up then but went under the radar..just feeling frustrated as I want answers on what is wrong with my lungs and the best possible way to treat them and my self moving in. Rant over.....phew!! X. Cuddle for scruffs x
I think having a spirometry test at your G.p's surgery is a complete waste of time.the practise nurses have only the most basic of training in Lung diseases and often are unable to interpret the results from a machine you could probably buy from Amazon at a 10th of the cost the Nhs pay for them.
If you have had recurrent lung issues for most of your life you need to see and be under the guidance of a properly qualified and time served respiratory consultant who has all the knowledge and access to technicians with all the proper kit to make an informed diagnosis and recommend a treatment plan.Then you can get on living a life that isn't dictated by your condition.
Bloody hell that was almost as long winded as your own rant but you know what i mean.

Hi what an awful doctor! I must admit I see only female ones now as they don't tend to treat me like this.
According to my respiratory nurse you can have emphysema without having copd which confused me. Most people have both chronic bronchitis and emphysema hence the copd label. It sounds like you haven't got any damage to your upper airways, just the bottom of the lungs which is emphysema. x
Yes hypercat, just frustrated that they havnt Said what is wrong with my lungs, an stay suggested emphysema 6 years ago, only found that out today, but doctor said that could if been just a bad xray....lots of things gave gone under the radar and they keep fibbing me off. Just hope I get to see a consultant who can give me some answers xx

Your so called respiratory nurse needs some training. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are two different conditions which both result in obstruction in the lungs.
Emphysema is the gradual destruction of the air sacs in the lungs. They 'pop' and disappear.
Chronic bronchitis is just that. Chronic long standing inflammation of the airways and lungs.
They were put together under the heading copd at a conference in the US in the 1960s for political reasons and by the 1970s the term had begun to be used here.
I don't like the title copd covering 2 different conditions but that is how it is for the convenience of government funding.

I think you didn't intend that reply for me but I do think that you are going to have to be more assertive with these people at your surgery. If my memory serves me right they have been dailing in their duty of care towards you for some time.

You can get emphysema throughout the lungs which is what my husband has. This is why he can't have valves.

Wow, What a Dick, That's the Problem, They come out of Training College thinking they know it all. These Days Too many without Common Sense or Knowledge. This is why The UK are crying out for Overseas Doctors. Out of all the Forum Members , I bet there is a High % with a similar Story.
Haha hacienda...he was a foreign doctor....French and in his 50's. When I started to get frustrated with him he then said its down to the nhs not giving them enough time to listen to patients, whilst he was looking at his watch to get rid of me for his next appt xx. Lets hope consultant is better x
OOPS, A Baguette. Well, I can see the Frustration, Hope your Consultant is Better. As you know COPD is the Umbrella Term for Majority of Lung Diseases, Emphysema being the Main one. This lady is in despair with her hand pressed to her face. I get so tired of reading the ignorance of medics and its awful effects on patients that sometimes I am rendered speechless!
Thanks LP i think i need a magnifying glass.now you have told me i can see her hand and i have learnt something already.As for the medics issue i completely agree and regardless of my own condition looking after Cecilia who couldn't even voice her displeasure at some of these misguided fools just drove me to despair.

I was treated well for my heart and lung issues at my last surgery but it took a number of years for them to admit I had a lung problem? It took me finding out I had worked with asbestos for over ten years before I was referred to a chest specialist and then a further 3 years to find I also had IPAH! Which I am now treated at Sheffield for.
Remember we know how we have changed health wise more than anyone! But everything has a cost attached to it now.
