Acid Reflux and medication

Hi guys, I have been taking Lansoprazole tablets for some 30 years and I have always been told to take them before bed particularly as I am a Bronch and have to prevent reflux during sleep. However, in February I read an article in one of my magazines which said that new findings and tests had discovered that taking this medication earlier in the day at least 1 hour before a meal, actually works better. The doctors think this works better because Lansoprazole disperses acid in the gut, so taking it before a meal makes sense. I was interested straight away and decided to try taking the med this way. I have now been on holiday, eating and drinking and I have had reflux once, it is a miracle, before trying this method of taking the tablet I used to suffer at least twice weekly. I have forgotten to take the tablet before my main meal a few times but I have found taking it 1 hour after the meal also works. I feel so much better and relieved I no longer carry Gaviscon everywhere. Hope this helps someone. Take care. Maximonkey

Hi sassy59, glad it is working for you. Originally I was on the tablet morning and night but after the reflux had settled the GP changed it to nightly. It has always worked but I have had problems with certain foods etc. I am really glad I now take it earlier in the day. Good luck Maximonkey

Thanks so much for this Maximonkey. There are so many different opinions as to when we should take reflux medication so it's important to hear about new thinking.

I thought you were supposed to take it in the morning first thing at least an hour before food anyway. If I didn't take mine I would have heartburn by 9 maybe 11 am at the latest. Glad this is now helping. :)
