What is extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R?)

Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) provides an alternative or supplement to mechanical ventilation by removing carbon dioxide directly from the blood using techniques similar to kidney dialysis. The procedure can be performed as part of comprehensive treatment for acute respiratory failure in the intensive care unit.

Interesting I've never seen or heard of this and it wasn't used when my husband was in intensive care in Switzerland or at A&E and n Respiratory ward in England.

My husband has bipap machine that removes Co2 at night.

Best wishes

I believe this is a specialist treatment carried out at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London.
