I have posted before about my doctor telling me there was a trace of emphysema that showed up on my ct-scan, wont know any more than that until next week but I was wondering my stats drop all the time sometimes I use my inhaler but not very often but does everyone with low blood oxygen levels have to be put on oxygen?

Hi

The only sure way is to ask for a referral to the respitory team for oxygen assessment.

GPs no longer responsible for oxygen administration.

Mine was a walking test oxygen desaturation was 83% with oxygen maintained 90/92% which is acceptable.

Hi Les, Only when I walk far or fast, my oxygen saturation drops to low 80's. Diagnosis is bronchiecstasis due to whooping cough and double pneumonia when I was 8 months old, plus minimal volume loss in base of both lungs due to damage also from that long long ago illness. At now age 75, one can imagine how difficult it has been to accept that diagnosis as fact. I do now, when looking back and recalling as a child how I could never run very far, never so far as my sis, which is likely the reason my mother told me about the whooping cough and pneumonia illness that I had once had. Over the years, I suppose that I became accustomed to my body being as it was, and I just never thought about what my mother had told me about that illness, not until I got older and became aware that my oxygen was dropping and was forced to learn why. So I have this illness that causes my oxygen to drop, and oxygen supplementation is the medicine that I have to use to keep the good health that I still have. Oxygen deprivation can cause major organ failures, kidneys, pulmonary hypertension, all sorts of additional problems that using oxygen can prevent. At first I didn't see it quite the same as now. Since I began using oxygen my quality of life has improved. I can walk much farther without tiring, and I feel freedom from worry, knowing that the oxygen is preventing further unnecessary damage. Best wishes for a good outcome at your medical appointment. J

Do you cough up blood with your bronchiectasis and is it mild or moderate?

My pulmo says that my bronchiecstasis is mild. I have never coughed up blood. I have several 'mild' lung issues that together, according to my pulmo, cause me to need supplemental oxygen when I walk far or fast.

Hi, I am waiting for an oxygen test for very much the same reason, I have already been told from an earlier test that I MAY need oxygen for movement & exercise, there is a name for it which I have forgotten. I am now in line for a second follow up for the same symptom. I am of the opinion that you do not need constant oxygen only for the exertion.

Stay at rest it appears you don't need it.

It does help your recovery when you have done something that has exerted you, walking up stairs for example.

Is that when you are walking .are your fingers cold when you test your oxygen. One of the respiratory nurses said if my fingers are cold I could have a low reading.

in reply to les4560

Remember to write down what you want to ask so you remember
