ARTICLE IN THE METRO.

Has anyone read the article headed

“ My lungs are broken but no one thinks I am disabled?”

I couldnt copy the link across but the article is in the bbc news online.

It’s about a young girl who has never smoked and was diagnosed with lung disease

after moving to London.

It reminded me of the post bobbyfloyd made last week.

It is such a sad story.

Thanks, an interesting read. No offence to London but I think the move away from the pollution was a good one

That’s terrible, poor girl.

Thank you 2greys for supplying the link. Xxxxx

Really terrible at such a young age. I hope she does manage to raise awareness. She is right, COPD does need to be part of routine health checks. The earlier it is detected the earlier intervention can start, to minimise the suffering caused. How I wish that I had been diagnosed so much earlier than severe.

I totally agree. Xxxx

Routine screening for lung disease is a small part of the proposed National plan for lung health. Along with swifter referral, earlier intervention, more access to pulmonary rehab and more doctors, nurses, trained in lung health.

Not before time either. It will also save the NHS money in the long run. Less on inhalers, less on o2 and less on hospital admissions. It has to make sense.

Some members of my local Breathe Easy group are meeting with our local MP this week, MP is showing interest in backing the 5 year NHS plan.

Your comments (common sense) about the saving money may be the best way to get government backing for NHS funding.

At the end of the week I'll let you know how the meeting goes.

1.2 million not yet diagnosed, waiting in the wings, so just for arguments sake, save an average of £100 on each patient that is £120,000,000 saved. It will probably be a lot more than that.

i was diagnosed with just over 50% lung capacity am now 22%. perhaps it was my fault for not going to doctors but any chest complaint should be tested for copd, it takes 2 minutes and can save a long time suffering for people, i say this because copd can effect the heart as it puts a strain on it so killing two birds with one stone, just a thought

Yes thank you heaps for sharing the story. I feel for her being so young and having a chronic illness. Great she is trying to raise more awareness.

Dreadful predicament for someone so young. Let’s hope her story gets read by someone who can make a difference.

Thanks for sharing. She should be on BLF Information, maybe she is? Being in Scotland and the Air is much Cleaner will undoubtably give her some Solace to this awful Condition. Bless her for Bringing COPD to a free paper. She should be on the Front of All Major Media Newspapers for all to Hopefully Understand. Good Luck Young Lady for your Future. XXXX

It is sad, I feel for her. I have just got off the phone and I could sense some irritation at the other end because I couldn't get my breath enough to talk clearly. It's just ignorance. Anything to raise awareness about all kinds of unseen disability is good.

And doesn’t it feel awful when it kills you to explain to someone on phone what you want and they can’t be bothered to listen or help . I have a friend who tells me everytime she goes to Drs they test for COPD said she tells her GP she smokes about 5 cigs a day and DR says she doesn’t smoke enough to get it. Then she coughs abit more.have stopped reg. visits as I can’t listen to it anymore feel awful

That surprises me. I would have thought the Dr would persuade your friend to quit completely

Very sad. I gave birth to a six week premature baby in 1958, her lungs were immature and she died aged two days old. I wonder if perhaps more attention should be given to the lungs of premature children during their formative years to help prevent lung trouble later in life. Just a thought. Love Iris x

Oh that is so very sad. I cannot begin to imagine what you have experienced. You are a strong and wonderful soul to have come through such a traumatic time. With sincere good wishes.
