yesterday after a walk i got very breathless and wheezy and i know just one puff of my rescue inhaler i will be ok but i wanted to see how long the breathless would last without taking my inhaler

So while i was resting i started doing breathing exercise for about 30 minutes but still bad even after one hour and had to take inhaler.

I know that i can get breathless with this copd and at the moment i can handle that,, But its the wheezing with the breathless that i find so hard to breath in and so scary to think that is how it may get in the future when i get to the very severe stage and inhalers dont work anymore.

I sometimes cannot believe how some of the caring people cope with this copd at the very severe stage.

and that is what frightens me in the future after last nights experience i cant stop thinking about it

Best wishes and respect to you all

Hi music, it's only natural to be scared but you will learn to control your breathing. It may not seem like it at the moment but you will learn. While you are resting do some breathing exercises that will help you, and take your time when doing any form of exercise or jobs. All this will help you to control your breathing. Hope this helps, let us know how you are doing and take care of yourself 😊 Bernadette xx

Very sound advice.

I concur with Damon, you do get acclimatised to it over time. Don't get overly concerned or you might create an unwarranted anxiety. It may not seem it now, but you will cope. There are quite a few members here that are very severe and they cope with it.

Something you can try next time, before you get too breathless on walks, is pursed lip breathing (YouTube demo). It takes a bit of practice to do it but for me it works on local hill walk. I don't have copd so appreciate it may be a different kind of breathlessness. If I'm a little wheezy I might have a puff of ventolin at the base of the hill or before it gets very steep. P

I have read that if you take ventolin 15 minutes before exercise or going for a walk it will help, i have tried this and it helped a bit, if i feel myself starting to struggle i just stop and look around, they do say it is good to get breathless but only i think at a sensible level, i always got Ventolin and symbicort on me when out, puts my mind at rest.

My understanding is that one uses the ventolin before you start the exercise. Again anxiety when we get breathless is a natural reaction.. Perhaps your inhalers need to be re assessed? Good wishes. Hope the situation resolves itself quickly for you.
