Not a good day yesterday. Told to change the way I exercise. Advice needed.

As a number of you know when first diagnosed after taking advice I started an exercise program. Which did improve my respiratory function.

Sadly yesterday I was diagnosed with "Chronic Pain Syndrome". I have long standing osteoarthritis in numerous joints and other musculoskeletal afflictions which over the last two years have become an increasing problem to the point we're I am never without pain and it is beginning to become life altering. Last year I was recording distances of 900m plus on my six minute walk tests. Now I struggle to walk out to the car without pain.

I was quite down yesterday as the consultant said there was little they could do to improve the situation except teach me how to manage the pain. They referred me to the pain management team. Which my wife found very helpful when she went on one earlier this year.

Thankfully I had more positive thoughts this morning and began thinking people cope with far worse in the group and I need to see what I can do to start helping myself. After doing some research I have come up with Tai Chi. The combination of breathing, relaxation and gentle exercise I believe would suit me and the condition.

Any other Ideas would be appreciated.

I am sorry to hear about the pain development. I think TaiChi would be excellent. It looks gentle but is very strong and should help with both your breathe control and keeping yourself centred and better able to manage pain .

So sorry Badbessie, anything gentle anyway..exercising in water helps..

If not you will find some good links on the BLF and the NHS websites.

Good luck 🍀

What a blow, after all that hard work. Tai Chi sounds an excellent way forward for you and hope you can find a group near to you, not essential but a little like with PR, being in a group can help motivate you and be a more enjoyable experience.

Having seen how the pain management team helped my wife it gives me hope. However that could be six months away. Like P.R there are many waiting. On the bright side Tai Chi is something both my wife and I can do together now.

Swimming? I Hate it, all that getting cold! Pilates? Love it. A good teacher can tailor it to your needs. Hope you find something good. I did one tai chi class but was very bored. I think that it was the wrong type of Tai Chi.

Sorry to hear of your pain, I sympathise as Pete suffers a lot too and is in pain every day with his back.

I think the Tai Chi would be great as it’s very gentle. Good luck to you. Xxxxx

There is a specific Arthritis Tai Chi by a Doctor Paul Lam, DVDs are good but there are classes doing this too. I have bronchiectasis and some osteoarthritis and helps a lot, the gentle stretching and breathing is really good...calms the mind too.
