You need to let the consultant know you would like copies of everything, test results, letters, reports written to GP.

At my GP surgery I have access to my results electronically, but this you have to apply for through your doctor who will authorise it, but they won't authorise it unless you have put it in writing that you would like access to all your test results (they don't give you full access to medical records, just recent test results from the hospital) and write same to the consulting specialist at the hospital, that you would like a copy of all correspondence to your GP and you would like that request put on your file for future correspondence.

In my experience the hospital always give a soft version to patients any way to avoid patients worrying unduly. But always get the actual test results. I would say though its likely if any results show something more sinister the medical professionals will always want to consult with the patient before releasing such documentation. That is not to say because you have a delay getting copies its going to be bad news. In these times, NHS is under strain to cope with the pressures of patient care. Having said that if cancer is pretty much on the cards the patient is usually advised in person quickly so that treatment can start quickly.

An excellent reply. If there was any concern regarding cancer then oncology would be phoning you direct to make an urgent appointment, probably for a PET Scan.

Thank you so much for your help xx

Hi Carol,

Why are your surgery being so ridiculous!

Your report and ct scan should be with them and they should email it to you. It should also be on the practice patient access for you to download.

If you are getting nowhere with them, call the oncology department that you usually deal with, explain the problem and insist that they access this information for you. They should also be able to send it directly over to any new consultant that you may be arranging to see. Good luck.

Oh save us from lazy idiots!

I got the actual disc of the scan too, so if I wanted to see another consultant I could take the disc with me for them to look at it. I didn't by the way but it's good having it in my possession. I did go private though so I don't know if they do it differently. But at the end of the day they're your results the surgery have no reason to keep them from you.

Hi , by law they HAVE got to give you a copy of everything you ask for medical y . You do not have to ring oncology or anyone else. Tell them you wish a copy and that you are prepared to wait 3 working days and a full copy of all your medical records in 7 days By law they have to. It will be another lazy receptionist . Good luck

Hello there, when I was dealing with oncology I had a direct phone number to contact a specialist nurse, however the system as changed since then but it should be on line on GP practice site if you have agreed to online test results ect. Maybe your surgery prefers the specialist to tell you so theres no misinterpretation of the results. Hope all goes well x
