This is an update from my previous post.
My Respiratory Consultant has taken my constant Chest Infections seriously.
I’m nebulising Gentomicin twice a day.
I am also taking Itraconozole for ABPA, this I have taken before at a higher dose and it did me no good at all.
Half the dose and I feel so much better.
My Ige is on the way down which is all good news, constant cough significantly reduced.
That’s very good news. Onwards and upwards!
How does that Gentamicin go for you because that was on my antibiogramme as well. I was told you could only get it in injections or IV over here.
I will ask my doctor.

I nebbed gentomycin in 1998 as a continuing prophylactic after an exacerbation that needed IV. First two weeks fantastic then slowly I became more and more breathless until I could hardly breathe or walk. Something unknown to me. This wasn’t broncho spasm, more the unusual situation where the gentamycin reduced the mucus so much that my lungs became stuck together by what looked like a thin white superglue. I took myself off the gent and nebulised saline for 6 months before I felt ‘normal’ again. I have found nebbing ceftazidime very effective in keeping the numbers down and am about to have another go with colomycin. I first tried it in 2013 but I stopped it after three months because I was getting a perststent cough ( my consultant was off sick at tge time). They have now looked at the record and found that I had a virus at that time which they think caused the problems. I think that the the cefrazidime needs a rest so fingers crossed for the colomycin. Gentamycin is a very old ‘rough’ but effective antibiotic. Some hospitals in the UK still use it for IV for bronch but I have always refused it as you have to have your blood taken after every dose to test that it is not affecting the liver. The mosr effective ab that I ever nebbed was cipro which I tested in 2009. It was amazing and it was very obvious which of us were on it. Unfortunately it has never been licensed in that form.Long answer to a simple question!
My cough has changed from all day everyday, to a couple of short sessions of coughing up very thick glue like mucus.
As long as it’s not infected, I’m very happy.
Asthma also feels more controlled.
I’m very grateful that we have all of these med’s.
Too true Ortho10. Just keep an eye on it. If you find that you are having it difficulties getting the air into your lungs ( you will know, believe me) get in touch with your consultant straight away. If the gent proves to be the problem there are several other abs that he give you to neb that hopefully won’t have the same effect. Good luck I hope that you continue to improve.
