H All

Just had my result from my lung consultant about my phlegm sample I had to supply so again I have Haemophilus influenzae it had cleared up before I saw my consultant so again on Doxycycline I'm at my wits end as no explanation why I keep getting this infection just want to give up.

I know you are not doctors but maybe one if you has had the same problem.

Hi Lina-61 what they don’t bother to tell people is that with bronchiectasis one bug or another lurks in the pockets of the lungs all of the time. When they have a party and you start to feel poorly and/ or ( we are all different) produce more, darker, or thicker sputum this is when you need abs to put them back in their place. Sometimes the bacteria can be reduced to such small numbers that they don’t show up in the lab but they never really go away. My permanent friend is now pseudomonas. I have been colonised with it since 1986 and nebulise ceftazidime to keep the numbers down and life going along as normal. Occasionally it plays up and I have cipro or on a few occasions, IV. Funnily since the pseudo came along it seems to have chased the haemophyllus away. Do remember to get as much mucus out of your lungs as you can, faithfully, every day to rob the bug of its lovely warm breeding ground. Tedious and tiring but crucial.

I hope that helped a bit.

It’s alright these nurses giving their opinion based on the fact that they know v little about bronch because they are trained only in copd. Some people get on fine with carbocysteine. I cannot tolerate it at any price! There are other ways to loosen the mucus. A flutter device and an active cycle of breathing, followed by ‘huffing’ to get it out. You can also nebulise saline. I do this twice per day with 0.9% isotonic saline. Your hospital clinic should supply you with the nebuliser. It is also possible to use stronger, hypertonic saline to do the job but this has to be tested under supervision first in case it causes problems. I don’t know if you have a bronchiectasis specialist or just a general respiratory consultant. All bronchs should be under the care of a bronch specialist because general respiratory consultants do not have enough training in it and GPs even less. Look for a bronch specialist in your area ( usually at big teaching hospitals). Take the name to your GP and insist on a referral. Good luck.

Hi

I have Bronchiectasis and I had Haemophilus it took ages load and loads of antibiotics it would clear for a short time them it was back. Consultant said it had probably colonised.

Xmas I was bad so was admitted 10 days of IV.

This might be what it needs to help you.

It’s a monkey to shift.

You take care.

Don't really want to go into hospital as it would be the same hospital where my mum died in June when I went to see the consultant his clinic was near the ward where she died it brought horrendous memories.

If it’s really bad then they offer you a pic line so you can have IV at home. They were going to do this with me but I didn’t really want one as I was scared of infection with my immunity, I have to have immunoglobulin infusions every 3 weeks.

However it’s a thought if you can’t get rid.

Hi Lina,

I have colonised heamophilus and a non TB mico bacterium that taking months to culture! Like you, mine keeps causing chest infections and further lung damage, so I’m on long term antibiotics and a course of different ones at lease monthly! I’m on oxygen now and it’s all very wearing but I’m still fighting as best I can! doxycycline makes me ill so I can’t take it all the time which I have tried. We’re all in it together, you are not alone in this struggle although it feels like it I know. Xx

Think I'm having side effects from the antibiotic doxycycline I'm quite itchy and burning in my body don't think it suits me but my husband doesn't believe me he said just get on with it waiting for a call from Gp surgery for advice quite irritable with it.

Thank you

That’s the problem with me. I dread taking new meds because I can be out of action for days from side effects and have appointments for dentist, hospital or other essentials that I can’t keep cancelling. Hope Doxycycline works out for you. Xx
