Hi Clarice, some bronchs cough up blood and some don’t. As Christina said it is usually a sign of an infection ( exacerbation).Small clots or dark bits of blood are not as worrying as bright red blood as they are a sign that the bleeding has already stopped. I would still go to your GPas you probably need an antibiotic to tackle the exacerbation.
Thanks for all your help it's put my mind at ease
Hi i have bronchectasis and i cough up blood often. Usually when there thicker its a sign of an infection and i see my dr asap.
See some one as soon as you can .
Good luck
Thanks for all replies
I would advise you to see your GP. The simple act of coughing can weaken the capillaries in small blood vessels in the throat and lthis can produce small amounts of fresh and darker old blood. However best advice with any new or continuing symptoms is to see your GP to rule out other causes.
Agree. The occasional isolated incident is nothing to worry about. Just recently though my mucus has been streaky with blood and the occasional blood clot. As I seem to be coughing more than usual, I am now resuming my winter antibiotics (Azithromycin) 3 times a week. Consultant agrees.
Thanks Claudine I'm also taking Azithromycin 3 times a week.Guess winter has started early with us
