Painful cramp

I have had my inhaler changed three times now, I have COPD and have no been diagnosed with a asthma crossover. The problem with cramp in the night has been growing steadily which the Dr said was a side effect of the inhaler and so changed it. I was fine for a few weeks and then back it came. I am now at the stage where the other night I woke up and could hardly move, the usually stretching did not work as quick as usuall. It did not subside for around half an hour. I was left with my leg feeling very sore the next day and has resulted in a tightening of the tendons which I can still feel four days later. Has anyone else ever had this?

Maybe there’s something similar in multiple inhalers as I too had terrible cramps with my previous inhaler and with my current one. I get cramps every night and in the day too, it can be ridiculously painful and often I can feel my muscles aching the next day. Right now my calf muscle is really sore from cramps last night. With the cramp, the pains, the breathing and everything else that wakes me up, some nights I barely sleep.

When I was first told about tonic water (by a nurse) stopping cramp, it did stop it for several months. It was amazing. Whether it was psychological or not I can’t say for sure, but I’d guess it really worked as cramps had been happening in my sleep as well as in the daytime. But then the cramp came back with a vengeance and although I still drink tonic water it’s not having any effect.

Magnesium deficiency can also cause cramps, might be worth looking into.

A big fat yes. Ventolin, which for me was almost useless as a reliever, gave me severe night cramps every night just as you described. It was changed to Bricanyl which does work as a reliever for me along with a diminished occurrence and severity of cramp. I now drink tonic water , eat apricots when in season or bananas when not, which helps reduce it even further. You do have my sympathy, I know just how painful it can be, to the extent that when in full swing, you wish your legs to be amputated. The worse part is just when you think it is over and subsiding it comes back with a vengeance. Luckily I only get that cramp a few times a month now instead of every night.

I also take two other long acting inhalers which may have a bearing on it too, but my copd is well under control, I would rather be able to breathe and function than to have those changed.

Learn new things on this site all the time never knew that inhalers can contribute to cramp..all fits in Tracy

i used to have night leg cramps and i take one 300 mg tablet of quinine sulphate each night.problem solved within weeks, you would have to drink more cans of tonic than physically possible to achieve the same result.

You don’t know my capacity to consume fizzy drinks 😁 But seriously, it’s true, I don’t know how much quinine there is in a glass of tonic water but probably trace amounts compared to tablets. Did you get these prescribed or is it something you can just buy?

On prescription from my Gp.i had tried tonic with my Gin but was advised by a neurological consultant that the equivalent amount of quinine would mean consuming a small reservoir of the stuff to have much effect and my wife being South American remembered being given quinine as a child in her country of birth for malaria treatment but that it also helped with cramps.bingo it works for me.x

Yes regularly get leg, foot, toe and occasional jaw cramp at night. More so when I’ve been in my feet for hours at work with flat shoes. Tonic water no help for me. I feel it may be my inhalers .

Could itchy skin also be a side effect of Fostair? I know this is off topic to cramp, sorry. I thought there was another thread more relevant to this but I can't find it. Lately I keep being woken up by itching! It's ridiculous. It's also very unpleasant. I feel like I'm being eaten alive by fleas or something. Has anyone else had this, or have I now got some skin problem as well?
