Hi. I am starting to struggle with my Bronchiectasis. My chest feels very heavy and I have almost lost my voice my throat feels so raw. I wonder if anyone has any remedies to ease the tightness which is very uncomfortable. I need to have another tc scan as my diagnosis was over 6 years ago and I can feel this getting a grip.
Many thanks Sue.

Maybe time to revisit your GP and go through your current symptoms. My throat was very hoarse lately and my chest tight. I have emphysema and bronchiectasis. I think I’ve come to the conclusion that mine is silent reflux caused by one of my inhalers as it’s eased somewhat now I’ve changed inhaler. Despite being on antacids I had to have rennies at night to ease my acid in my throat and the coughing. Ask your GP.
If you're getting acid reflux regularly you need more protection for your oesophagus than Rennies will provide. Gaviscon provides a barrier against both acid and bile reflux and is a much better option, but I'll let you into a secret - Sainsbury's 'Heartburn and indigestion liquid' is very good, works as well, costs half as much and 'appears to be' the same.
Gaviscon is the best of over the counter reflux tablets
Hi falconcottage1. This is a complicated one. If these symptoms have been coming on gradually you may have what I call a ‘creeping exacerbation’ and will need your sputum tested and the right antibiotic. AND empty empty empty those lungs. The sore throat could, as Chriskho says, be caused by silent reflux.
However, if the symptoms came on quite suddenly it is more likely one of those wretched viruses which are going the rounds. Do you have a fever because this is usually a sign. I have just been ill for four weeks with symptoms such as yours. I took my emergency antibiotics to cover me but felt that it was a virus. I had a ver tight chest which is not normal for me. I saw my consultant yesterday and she confirmed that it was a virus and could take 8 weeks for me to get back to my normal state.
If you have a good GP I would suggest seeing them anyway. Take a sputum sample with you.
I hope that helps sort the wood from the trees a bit.
Good advice - 18 months ago I had a persistent bug for 6 months - they should have tested it before. Needed a lot of antibiotics then told by student physiotherapists how to do deep breathing - I do it for at least half an hour each morning and notice the difference a lot
Did the physio teach you how to use the cycle of breathing to loossen the gunk so that you can get it up? This is the most important thing. When I was a child I was bullied into trying to do this first thing in the morning but actually it doesn’t want to move until around midday. Then I have a major session of emptying. I also do it around my daily activities. It is this that gets those nasty
Little bugs out of the pockets in the lungs and stops them having a party. As you probably know I have just done a world cruise. Fitting this in around tours with early mornings, long coach journeys, and very pre historic toilets was a logistical triumph! I think I should write the book ‘always know where the loo is’
Hi little Pom, She taught me to breathe out for 4 in for 4 five times then huff 3 times then repeat 10 times the whole procedure-half an hour-ish. When I don’t have a flu/ cold I hardly get anything up but still do the exercise. Crossing arms and turning from one side to the other and pushups against the wall. I’ve been slack with the last 2😕. I have a cold now and the exercise is helping me remove phlegm-I’ll wait a few more days before seeing if I need antibiotics. I have always needed them for the last 30 years even before bronchiectasis. Also a controlled asthmatic with seretide.
That sounds brilliant. Just the job. As you have been coping with asthma and other problems for years I am sure that you can recognise when a virusy cold type thing has got you as opposed to sliding down the greasy pole into an exacerbation. If you feel that it is more than a virus and you will need abs don’t leave it too long for the bugs to breed. I did this in 2015 and allowed myself to get a pneumonia and empyema which was a right performance. With the virus I have just had I am sure that this would have happened if I hadn’t taken my abs because the resident bugs take advantage of the fact that the virus has got you to run amock. It is the affects of the virus that are going to take me a time to climb out of. Isn’t it tedious sometimes. Hope you feel better soon.
Hiya, I lost my voice due to taking the Seretide inhaler, changed to Fostair and had no more probs with that. Maybe you're the same not sure about the tight chest. Maybe try the bubble pep therapy or cough Linctus. Drink plenty of fluids.
You haven't said where you are at with treatment. Do you have a nebulizer? Are you clearing your lungs properly? Having said that, you obviously ought to go and see your doctor at the very earliest opportunity because it sounds as if you have an infection. If you have a sterile sputum pot, take a fresh sample with you. It needs to be a good one that you have coughed up from deep down in your lungs.
