Inhalers and heart rate

Do you know if there is a short acting bronchodilator that doesn't increase heart rate? I need Ventolin (salbutamol) pretty often, but I hate the fact that it makes my heart beat fast.

Any thoughts?

I have used Bricanyl for 18 months without any issues. It is the only substitute for Salbutimol. It is a turbohaler, a powder, you do not use a spacer with it.

I think it might effect your heart rate if used too often. I’ve used it for a few years now and find it much more effective than Ventolin, so use it much less frequently....max of four per day suggested by GP. I find I never need to exceed that now....generally one or maybe two uses, spaced by four hours, works well for me, though usual addition of steroids sometimes needed for chest infections and difficult times. Might be worth checking it out with your GP.

You haven't mentioned why an increased heart rate is a problem for you. If you don't have tachycardia, then an increase might be useful in circulating the increased oxygen supply which the inhaler will effectively provide.

It's mostly because I hate the feeling as it makes me feel a bit panicky. But you're right, maybe the increase is actually a good thing.

Superzo0b has the right idea. We sometimes have to chose between shortage of breath and taking an aid for it, or suffer in silence. There are a few sites on the internet which give heart rates for different ages. Does it take a long time for your heart rate to reach more normal levels?

Yes, it oftens lasts for an hour or two, sometimes more. I guess it's no big deal, it's just a bit annoying.

I should seek advice from your doctor. It shouldn't 't take that long to get back to normal. Leeds United would be top of the league if it did. They always seem out of breath.
