Pete can’t do it either. I can’t remember what it’s for but ask your doctor and see if there is a different test you can do. Xxxx

"It is FeNo or Exhaled nitric oxide. FeNo is measuring the amount of inflammation present in your airways which can identify how well controlled your asthma is. This is an odd test where you have this handheld white box thing which you need to breath in through and out though at a certain rate. I have done this test with a number of different people who all have different strategies. The aim of the test is to keep a cloud between two lines by breathing out through the machine at a certain rate."

Hi Lightup,

If it is the FeNo test, it took me about a dozen tries when I first had one, then about 4 or 5 tries the next time. I can now do it first time when I have it.

I find it works if you use the same pressure exhaling out that you you need when you are inhaling through the mouthpiece.

It is not measuring how hard you blow out, or force of exhaling, nor how much you exhale like the peak flow or spirometry tests, it is similar to using pursed lips breathing.

I hope this helps.

I had trouble with that too when I first started doing it. Now I can do it the first or second time. In my case I don’t the instructions are clear enough from the nurses. They just say blow into the mouthpiece and keep the ballon steady,’ not how to keep it steady! It’s as if it’s a test on my technique, not how much nitric oxide I exhale!

First time I have heard of this test. I do have a lot of inflammation in airways so maybe I should ask for this test. Has anyone been given a particular medication to combat the inflammation?
