The Kardomah Cafe

He must have loved his coffee

He went there every day.

Just to have one single cup

Before he went to pay.

He never read the paper

Provided there for free.

He just sat there staring.

At what?...I couldn't see.

This went on for many weeks.

People thought how odd,

He didn't go to a cheaper place

And save a couple of bob.

Then one day I passed the church

And it became quite clear.

Why he'd acted like he did

He married the Cashier.

(I know because I was there. 1955)

Is that the one in Briggate Don ?

in reply to newlands

No, the one I mentioned is no longer there so I just pinched that one as an example. I don't know if there are still Kardomahs anywhere. They used to be very popular.

The one in the photo was taken in Briggate Leeds very popular in the 50s

What a coincidence that you should know it! I just picked that one at random. :-)

Ah the Kardomah. At least the Harbour Bar in Scarborough is still going strong.

Lovely photo Don.

My wife and I spent our last holiday in Scarborough in February 2010 before she died of lung cancer the following month. I was still fit enough to push her around in a wheelchair then, hills or no hills. :-)

Awe Don your holiday with your wife in Scarborough must be a very special memory for you. Hope you managed to get a knickerbocker glory in the Harbour Bar. I can’t believe they had their 70th anniversary last year. Nothing has changed, the quality and the cleanlyness (only the prices unfortunately).

Lots of love

Scarborough was a great favourite with us, unlike our home town, it doesn't seem to have changed very much over the last 50 or 60 years. I still go there in the campervan every year. But yes, that last holiday together was very special.

We were there last Monday Don and not only was the weather beautiful but I had a good day re health. Love the east coast and higher up in Northumberland. (Hence the avatar).

Did you go to that horrid underground place just before you turned right to the south bay? Ivy Benson used to play there and my Mum loved it - we didn’t!

You must have had some good times in 55 years with some wonderful memories.
