Help my shellshock.

I have been breathless with a hacking cough for 7 weeks now. Having moderate copd I am used to chest infections which clear up after 2to3 weeks. However, I've had 3 lots of different antibiotics, as well as several lots of prednisolone-to no avail. So I've had 3 lots of blood tests, sputum tests, an ecg, an x Ray, and a c.t scan. This morning, I went to the hospital appointment, to get a diagnosis, to be told that it looks likely to be lung cancer. I nearly fell off my chair. They have given me liquid morphine in the meantime, and booked me in for a broncospocy in a week. Has anyone had an experience like this? Can anyone reassure me? I'm only mid 50's and have two teenage daughters. I'm terrified. Help ........

I fully empathise with you, I received my diagnosis of lung cancer yesterday morning. There is absolutely nothing that either of us can do about it, other than remain positive, our lives are in their hands now. I was just about to make my post about it and you beat me to it. Let us hope they have caught it in early development.

Have you had the same tests as me? Have you already had the biopsy? It would be helpful to share our experiences. I live in Ipswich, Suffolk. Wondering how good the team is here. I've so many thoughts running through my head, hard to know where to start. Clare

I am still the same with wild thoughts, but really they do not help, my breathing today was really bad with the anxiety until I went to work which took my mind of things for a while, try to distract yourself with good thoughts. I have not had a biopsy, yet, that will come after the PET Scan to see how active the tumor is first. Read the link in my post, above yours, to a post I made 10 months ago. That may give you a different slant on things.

What a shock for you, I do feel for you and hope that you get the best treatment possible. My sister in law, who had breast cancer, was treated in Ipswich and they were very good. Many blessings xx

Thank you. I hear they're good with breast cancer, but don't know about lung cancer. One hears about a postcode lottery. Any info appreciated.

Dear Hidden .

What an awful shock for you. I cannot imagine all the thoughts running through your mind at the moment. I too have two daughters. I understand your concerns about them as well.

Once you have had your bronch you will know more and very likely and quickly your team will want to move swiftly with treatment. It is important for you to rally together people who can be supportive to you. Your children too may need to put aside extra curricula activities for awhile to support their mum until you are in your feet again. Support is so important.

Cancer treatment has progressed so much in recent years. I am sure you will be under good care. Please do make a list of questions you need to ask at your next appointment. Bring your children with you if that's a possibility. They need to know what's going to happen and how it will effect you and them.

Please know you are not alone. This place is always here for you anytime. Please do let us know how things go when you are able.

So sorry to read of your news. I can understand what a terrible shock it must have been. My dad was diagnosed with lung cancer twenty years ago and his treatment was very successful. His life got back to normal after the op to remove the tumour, and he got back to playing golf several times a week. I know this is probably not very helpful to you because everyone is different, but it isn’t all necessarily doom and gloom. Good luck.

So sorry Lady Claraby. I am waiting now for diagnosis and have given much thought to this exact possibility which you and 2greys are facing. I have read tomes of course, but am hard pressed to give one correct citation., only to say that I have come away with the impression that it is not the morbid news it once was. That there is good treatment available now. All good thoughts

The uncertainty is probably the worst part of this, and the shock of the diagnosis of course, but please try to stay positive; once you have a confirmation of diagnosis, or otherwise, you wiill feel able to make decisions. Hang on to the thought that there are many more survivors of this than ever before, and they are living normal lives. You and 2greys will be in the thoughts and prayers of everyone. xxx

Thank you. My partner died of small cell lung cancer in 2006 7 months after his diagnosis. This was my previous experience of the disease which wasn't good , hence my panic and fears. .
