Aerosure medic-how to disinfect.

Picasso10 profile image
26 Replies

I've bought myself an Aerosure Medic to help me with my COPD.The instructions tell you to clean it with a mild disinfectant. The examples it gives you are Sodium Hypochlorite and Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate.Never heard of either of them.Could any members of this forum who have an Aerosure Medic tell me how they disinfect their Aerosure? For example could I use something as simple as warm water with a little Fairy liquid in it to disinfect it or what method they use?

That’s what I do. A few drops of any old washing up liquid in a bowl of hot water, then rinsed in another bowl

Respiratory nurses were talking about them last week, small drop of fairy in warm water then rinse in warm water then air dry never dry with a tea towel.

If I remember correctly it is used for sterilizing baby bottles and things like that but also has an industrial type which is used for several other sterilizing activities.

Thanks for all the replies.Probably wash in warm soapy water.Milton brings back memories of over 40 years ago, sterilising baby bottles.

I remember Milton (almost 38 years ago), much easier for my daughters with their steam sterlisers.

I am interested in the aerosure device you mention in your post. Did your doctor advise you to get it because i have never heard about this and it sounds really helpful. My worry is that my COPD is quite bad and my daughter said to check in case it could make things worse. Any info appreciated.

Kind regards, Sheila1kerry

No Sheila, it won’t make things worse. I think it’s probably more helpful for people who can’t exercise so well. It’s meant to create a slight resistance when your breathing through it to get your lungs to work harder. I have one and sometimes I think it helps and other times I’m not so sure. I wonder if it’s mind over matter. I would say you have nothing to lose by trying it as it certainly won’t make it worse but as they are quite expensive, I would say think it over before you buy, for that reason only. You have to purchase new mouth pieces every 6 months. I got mine on offer with a few extra thrown in. Take care 🤗

Thanks Hayley for taking the time to answer me. I certainly cannot exercise ! L.O.L.

I can hardly move sometimes, today is a better day though, you know how it is, up and down. I will speak to my doctor, thery are trying to get me to pulmonary rehab again as last time i ended up in hospital ( nothing to do with the rehab though , unless i overdid it) .

Once again thanks ❤️

I saw it advertised on TV.I googled it and got a lot of information on it.Also there are a lot of posts on this forum about it.There is an offer on it at the moment from the makers and if you self certify you have COPD,you get the VAT off it.Mines cost just over £108.I have only started to use it yesterday and I am cautiously optimistic about it if it will do all the things it is supposed to do.Also if you go onto Amazon, you will read a lot of reviews.I feel it is helping me to get phlegm up a lot easier but only time will tell.

That is interesting as they are expensive, so thanks for that info. I will look into it when i have my daughter here to help research it all.

Thanks ❤️

I think it’s a bit like exercise where you won’t feel the benefits straight away, you have to keep going. I have had mine for 4 months now and I do feel a bit better 🤗

I have been using one for around 3 years now I feel it helps me a lot especially when I cant get out as the weather is so cold. I also leave mine to soak in half a Milton tablet and rinse with warm water and dry dry. I put the Milton in an old ice cream tub and then leave the mouthpiece to dry on the top after it has soaked for a while.... Hope this helps good luck with yours x

Thanks for the helpful reply.Glad it is helping you.My biggest problem is getting phlegm up and as I said earlier,I am cautiously optimistic having only started using it.It says on the advert for it that it creates a resistance breathing into it but I have not really noticed this.I will either get Milton or use warm soapy water to disinfect it.

Use on the first level to try and help get phlegm up and then go on to the 2nd level to exercise your lungs x

As well as using w/up liquid once a week, I also use anti bacterial wipes in between each use, just on the mouth piece.

I go by Aerosure recommendations:- It is recommended that after every use the mouthpiece (A) and Valve Head (B) are cleaned according to the instructions below.

It is recommended that users who are currently suffering from a chronic respiratory disease (e.g. Cystic Fibrosis,

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) or are prone to recurrent chest infections or have an immune deficiency should soak the mouthpiece (A) and Valve Head (B) in a mild disinfectant solution after every use.

It is recommended that other users should soak the mouthpiece (A) and Valve Head (B) in a mild disinfectant solution at least once a week.
