And didn't he smoke like a chimney?

I don’t know... but I don’t smoke at all and I have bronchiectasis.

And even if he did he didn’t deserve that.

He did smoke heavily. You would think someone with so many health issues (which I believe included TB?) would take better care of their lungs wouldn't you.

He had Dengue fever when young too according to wiki. Oh my goodness, took me ages to read all the information about him. He certainly packed a lot in to his short life

You would think so... maybe be didn’t think not smoking would make any difference... the health implications weren’t so clear then. Or maybe be was just addicted! But you’re right ...it would have been sensible to quit!

Where did you see this Ramy please?

I heard it on a radio 4 programme about him yesterday... I googled when I got home just to make sure I’d heard right because I was driving so couldn’t rewind to check.

Thank you Ramy - sorry I missed it. I listen to radio 4 loads (is there any other station). I wonder if they gave an explanation as to what broncheictasis was, because would have been an opportunity missed.

The radio 4 show described bronchiectasis as a lung disease that makes people susceptible to chest infections... I think that was all they said.... they then talked about his TB.... maybe you can find it on the radio 4 website... podcast or something? Radio 4 rocks!😀

It does especially ISIHAC! I know I'm getting old as when I was ironing (not something I do since my daughter tought me it was a complete waste of energy) and they said 'Now it's Gardener's Question Time' and I actually said out loud 'Wow'. That's how sad I am;-)

Heehee.... but I don’t know what ISIHAC is!!!!! I love it all and listen to the Archers! I was bottle fed to that as a baby and have continued to listen ever since. 😀

I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. Not meaning I don't know - that is the name of the programme. Used to have the wonderful Humphrey Littleton as host.

Just found this - suggestive of a genetic form of bronchiectasis re the infertility - CF or PCD. Thanks for this find Ramy.

I have Bronchiectasis, NEVER smoked, but have had infections that were not treated properly or at all plus a low immune system caused by Multiple Scelerosis ?? Leading to the condition but there all many people on the site that get sad with the link to smoking.

But goat that it was diagnosed in Orwells time.

It is really awful when people automatically link lung disease with smoking...

And he is recorded as having it.

George Orwell’s bronchiectasis experience is one that is common to many of us. He was born in India in 1903. As a child he had many chest infections and bouts of pneumonia. He went on to live a hard life in Burma and later in Spain. All the time experiencing repeated chest infections. In 1938 he contracted Tuberculosis. All of this repeated assault on his lungs resulted eventually in a diagnosis of bronchiectasis. How the heck the man could bear to smoke whilst living with all of this is beyond me. But there you are. In those days they knew what bronchiectasis was because many people had it due to damage from chest infections and pneumonia in a time before antibiotics. By the time I was growing into adulthood they had stopped training doctors in it because it was seen as a ‘disease of the old’ Who would eventually all die off. As more people, young and old are now being diagnosed than ever it just shows you how much the medical establishment know - or care.

Really interesting... and you do find that they don’t care! Poor George Orwell!

Yes I guess it's just educating people about the range of lung disease ( including medical professionals) we all have to cope the best we can with whatever is thrown at us.

I have Asthma and Bronchiectasis and Never smoked... Been told my lungs probably that as bad as a smokers.. So unfair... Drs find it hard to believe never smoked...Its not linked to smoking neccesarily as most of us on here know.
