Can you help with some research?

Community Acquired Pneumonia is the most common infectious disease needing hospitalisation in western countries.

It’s normally treated with antibiotics, but we don’t have enough evidence to say which antibiotics will do the best job of treating it. Or how long people should take them.

In Edinburgh, a team of researchers are about to start investigating this problem. But first, they want to find two people with lung problems to join the steering committee.

You’d be part of a group of doctors and researchers that meet, either in person by telephone or by skype. They’ll want to:

•hear your perspective on their plans

•make sure they aren’t making assumptions about what people with lung disease think or want, and

•make sure that what they’re asking research participants to do is reasonable

The first meeting is in April next year and the study will run until March 2022.

There’ll probably be one meeting a year, which will last for 2 hours. The committee could ask for an extra meeting, but it’s unlikely.

Meetings will be held in Edinburgh, but you can join in by skype or telephone if you can’t travel. If you do travel to the meeting, they’ll cover your travel costs.

They’re looking for someone who has, or has had, any lung condition. Although it would be helpful if you’ve had pneumonia, it isn’t necessary. So, if you’re interested contact Dr Morag MacLean for more information. Her telephone number is 0131 651 9914 and her email address is PIBCAP@ed.ac.uk.

Thanks guys, and Merry Christmas!

Bethany

I had community acquired pneumonia last year and was hospitalised with it. And I also live in Edinburgh so I may give her a phone. Merry Christmas Bethany.

Merry Christmas!

Do you think Pneumonia in the past could be a starter point for the development of COPD if you smoke throughout the years?

Hi Rosemarie, I'm not medically trained so I'm afraid I'm not sure on that one.

Hi Bethany

I would have so loved to have been part of the steering committee but had to give up being part of the Pat Advisory Group with ERS due to ill health. It was nice though to meet up with Ruth at congress. Miss it so much.

I really hope you do it Nottobad, especially as you live in Edinburgh. It is a commitment but I am sure you will find it very rewarding in knowing you will be part of helping others. I am sure you will have a lot to offer having been in hospital quite recently with the dreaded p.

love cx

That's such a shame cofdrop. I'm glad you could make the congress though. It sounded like it was a great event.

ty,it was long stay

I have COPD and have had pneumonia, but no idea what sort as I couldn't get a doctor out to me at the time and was only diagnosed by x-ray and CT scan after the solitary, near death event. I couldn't travel and live in Wales but would be interested to find out more and see if I could assist in any way. As I definately would like to improve the situations for patients here in South Wales.
