Hi everyone just wondering my hubby has stage 3 copd and just lately while it's been very cold when we are outside he seems to be more breathless than usual and can't walk as far as before which wasn't far anyway and has to keep stopping for inhaler i tried to reassure him by saying I think it's breathing cold air in his lungs .

Winter weather and copd
Hi try and ensure he breathes in only through his nose and not his mouth as it is the cold air which is affecting him.
I am only in the early stages and find that the cold air even affects me so I use a scarf round my nose and throat. A loose holey one is best. Or you can buy a buff which goes round the head, neck and face.
as hypercat mentioned, a 'Buff' is brilliant. Ideal Xmas pressies. Check out on Amazon for full explanation, demonstration of ways to wear it and loads of patterns and colours to suit everyone. Personally I prefer the fine wool ones of one colour. They're utterly brilliant.
Yes a buff or snood is brilliant. I have one and find it an essential item when really cold, for me this is below 5 deg C.
I wear a snood and have it loosely covering my mouth. If I'm not working and it ps super cold and I don't have to then I don't go out.
Hello Mel. I am having the same trouble. But now wear a scarf fairly loosely round the mouth. Also been practicing breathing in through the nose and out by the mouth. I have to concentrate to do that or get extra breathless. also have been given a balaclava, but do not think I am quite ready for that. not quite my style! take care.
I have recently bought a Buff or Snood as some call it. More convenient than a scarf but essential to pull up over the mouth when out in these temperatures currently. It helps even if you do breathe through your nose. I only have to catch a cold draft and I am in serious difficulty. I have COPD Emphysema. 4 years ago I went out in late November on a sunny but cold afternoon without taking proper precautions and by midnight Para Medics were called to the house and trying to decide if I ought to go into Hospital. So beware and keep mouth and chest well wrapped up.
