I've been struggling with vertigo for several years but since April this year it has been much more frequent. I reached the point where going out had become such an anxiety that I was almost giving up. This has been particularly annoying as my chest (I have asthma, COPD and bronchiectasis) has improved this summer and so I could have been outside walking in the sunshine instead of moping indoors afraid to go far from my home for fear of losing my balance.
But, my good news is that I have had no vertigo for three weeks and yesterday we had an outing to an old manor house in Brighton (Preston Manor) followed by a meal at a lovely pub in Poynings. I was chuffed that I managed steps and stairs without huffing and puffing - maybe my enforced resting has done some good for my chest? Well, I'd like to think sitting about all summer hasn't been a complete waste of time.
Anyway, I'm chuffed that I managed all those stairs and had no problems with vertigo. Just wanted to share my joy! xx Moy

I am so pleased for you. Vertigo has been the bane of my life, all of my life. However, since a consultant taught me how to do Epley's manoevre and I keep stugeron in my handbag it has become much more manageable. Maybe this could help you too.
Thanks for your suggestion, littlepom. I have Menieres disease and the Epley manoevre is usually used when people have crystals in their inner ear (so I believe) so not a helpful thing in my case. However, the consultant has started me on a diuretic to help relieve the fluid in the inner ear and - touch wood - I seem to be getting some relief. I carry Buccastem with me in case of attacks - don't ever have it far away from me! It helps stop the vomiting as long as I take it at the first sign of an attack.
I'm glad you have found something to help you manage your vertigo - it's such a nuisance, isn't it? My balance goes suddenly and quite dramatically so I haven't been confident to go anywhere without my husband who, thank God, is absolutely wonderful. It's limiting for him too, though, as he is reluctant to leave me for long periods 'in case'!
I'm making the most of this 'break' and plan to go off to the park in a minute (with my husband, of course!) for a walk around the lake - not too close to the edge! Lol!
Yes you are right. The bits of carbon in my ear break off and have a party. They thought that I had meunieres at first because it was so bad but luckily not. It must be dreadful. I'm glad that the diuretics are working. Strangely I have found that I don't get so dizzy and seasick on cruises now that I take a diuretic. That must be it. Always a silver lining. I hope you stay undizzy and can have lots of outings. X
When I had vertigo a few years ago, I was prescribed Buccastem and it cleared up. Now it's come back a little bit but I couldn't remember the name of the medication, thank you Moy for reminding me. Lilian xxxxx
My sister suffered really badly from Menieres disease and her hearing steadily declined along with it. She has discovered that certain foods set it off. She has isolated them down to cows dairy and beef as well as soy. She has been able to live a normal life for over a year now by never eating these. Her hearing has also improved so much she now no longer needs a hearing aid. Just thought I'd share this with you as it is well with trying. You never know!
Thank you! That's interesting. I've never heard of anyone improving due to cutting out those things. I'm so pleased it has worked for your sister and amazed that her hearing has improved. I'll think about food triggers and see if there is any pattern.
Funnily enough, since I've been taking a diuretic, I have regained a very small amount of hearing in my deaf ear - not enough to be without my hearing aids but some improvement nevertheless. It just goes to show that things can change sometimes so to never give up.
It is well worth trying. My sister only looked into it because she traded the internet and found research which pointed to food allergies being responsible for menieres. She had never been told about this by her doc, but since the meds were not helping and she was deteriorating so much, she decided to give it a go. Dairy is quite a common allergy so it may be worth a go.
Hi moy so pleased that things are improving for you must have felt so good to have a lovely day out without huffing and puffing. And no vertigo to boot magic xxx
Thank you. I had a lovely (short) stroll and enjoyed seeing all the ducks and swans on the lake, plus all the happy families out for Sunday afternoon outings. Lots of buggies and kids on bikes. It made me feel part of the world again! xx Moy
