Azithromycin antibiotics

My consultant has changed my inhalers and put me on azithromycin. One tablet three times a week for 3 months minimum. Seems a lot as I'm not keen on pills. Has anyone out there taken this, your help please.

Hello chubby2x22. Lots of people take azithromycin three times each week on a permanent basis. It acts as a prophylactic to prevent exacerbations ( infections). I took it for five years until it stopped working.

Hi I started taking Azithromycin in January . I take one a day and haven't had an infection since I started them.

I took one every day for five years but had to give it up recently due to side effects and the fact that it didn't seem to be benefitting me any more.

You will probably find it a huge help in cutting down on infections and many people find it almost a miracle drug for a few years at least.

Hi Billejean. What were you prescribed after you stopped Azithromycin?

Thanks

Nothing at the moment. But I am continuing to nebulise Colomycin twice a day, to keep the bugs down.

hi, I am on these every day, I do feel much better on them though I still get exacerbations, but I think you will benefit from them, some consultants prescribe them three times a week, some 7 times a week (one a day), good luck on them

I have had this course of treatment twice before and found it very good at helping my breathing and cough x

It is being prescribed quite commonly now.

I started this 7 weeks ago, it is a real help and it has a big anti inflammatory effect as well...

See you how you go with it? You

I was originally given it 3x weekly through the winter months but it was extended to year-round because I had a serious infection in August! I feel it keeps everything just under the surface and hopefully it doesn't exacerbate.

The only time recently when I developed an infection was after flying - it's the recycled air that's the problem. Otherwise I try hard to stay away from crowded situations in the winter months particularly - i.e. buses, cinema, theatre etc. You may also need an emergency pack of something else, just in case, so that you don't have to wait for appt./prescription but it depends what your condition actually is.

I too was prescribed azithromycin earlier this year but afraid they did not agree with me, never really felt well on them, although it would seem by the above that I was an exception and that many people get on well with them so hope you do too - good luck. xx
