Carbocisteine question (bronchiectasis)

Hi,

Is it ok to open carbocisteine capsules up and mix the powder with orange juice instead of swallowing them as capsules? I did so this morning and it doesn't seem to have caused any problems.

(Prescribed for bronchiectasis, newly diagnosed 2 weeks ago, and not sure yet if it's helping)

Thanks

Rachel :-)

If you ok with it it may be ok but I would ring the chemist and check just to be on the safe side. I've been on them a long time and never had any problems. Bit please check it out and let us know how you are. Lease keep posting love Bernadette 😳 xxx

Hi

Would check with GP or Pharmacy, quite often the capsule is designed to allow a slow release or correct placement.

Your stomach acids may destroy the medication using the method you are considering.

Thanks Bernadette and Stone, that's really helpful.

I'm also taking probiotics to boost my immune system, and the leaflet with those capsules says it's ok to take the powder out and mix it with a cold drink. I decided to use the idea with the carbocisteine instead because the capsules are bigger and I don't like swallowing them! Will check with a pharmacist before trying it again, and let you guys know what they say...

Thanks again,

Rachel :-)

Hi if you have a problem with the capsule you can get carbocisteine in liquid form which would be better. I'm allergic to the actual capsules so have it as a liquid. Good luck hope it helps Barbara.

I don't know either but Stone's answer makes sense re stomach acid.....just a thought, some people get acid reflux with the carbocysteine so if you've a dodgy stomach I'd choose a cold drink other than the very acid orange juice. P

I get carbocisteine as a syrup which goes by the name of Mucodyne. I am vegetarian and do not take capsules.

If it is broken down & mixed the effect may not be as concentrated,, check with GP before continuing. I take the tablets whole with a small drink of water, they work for me and have the desired effect of diluting the mucus.

My husband had this in liquid form

Best wishes

Hi, my mum had the liquid sort for ages before any one thought to change it and was as good on that as now with capsules.

That was a good point about slow release etc with capsules that may be affected. I would not have considered that.

I am sure I would have once. I am undoubtedly getting stipuiere no stupord no stupider yes that's it haha
