My hubby has emphysema and on various medication. including his own nebuliser used 3 time a day. Until recently taking Carbocisteine capsules 2 x twice a day was working well but now does not. Going to try and speak to Dr tomorrow to see if we can increase to 2 x 3 time a day. He did start on this and it worked well. Has anyone else had this problem?

Carbocisteine 375mg Capsules
Get him to see a doctor to check out that he does not have an infection. I have to up my dose to three times a day during an infection. I also have Emphysema.
Hi, I am waiting for the Dr to call back as he is not well enough to walk to Drs which is just 10 houses away. Does not appear to have an infection as stuff still clear but I do have am emergency supply of antibiotics if the Dr says take then. Unfortunately his Dr retired a couple of months ago and we have a new one that he had not yet met! We are planning, once he gets over this, to visit to discuss his care plan as the old one was with the old Dr so there needs to be a new one set up. I am his primary carer so need to have the latest info possible.
I would love to know more about Carbocisteine, been thinking of trying it for a while.
Carbocisteine 375mg has worked really well for loosening the mucus/phlem on the lungs and bringing up Would really recommend it.
I have been on carbocisteine 3x 2 daily for five years and find it has worked really well for me. I did have it reduced for a while but found mucus and cough increased. My current consultant has said nothing about reducing the dose so I shall carry on until he says something as I trust him. I haven't had an exacerbation since October. I have bronchiectasis and obliterative bronchiolitis.
I was started on 2x3 Carbocisteine a day excellent results now on 1x3 a day unless phlegm haed to clear, my doc tells me to increase as needed. Hope doc agrees & new dosage helps
All above is good advise, I go up and down from 2 x 2/day to 2 x 3/day to suit phlegm (as per Doctor) Most useful when phlegm is an issue is to drink fresh orange juice as that cuts into the mucus. Plus doing you huffing clearances will exercise the lungs too.
I have COPD and was put on Carbocisteine several years ago, 2 capsules 3 times a day on a routine appointment with consultant. He told me to take that dose for a month, then reduce it to 2 capsules twice a day, and I did that.
A few years later, following a bad infection, I was waking at night choking on phlegm. Incredibly sticky phlegm that I could not cough up and could not ignore, it was impossible not to cough. I hadn't the breath to keep coughing, and generally I just went unconscious or fell asleep. That went on for a couple of years and no-one offered any solution. It was scary to say the least - I felt it was like playing Russian roulette.
Then I had an appointment with a respiratory physio nurse, in whom I'm sad to say I had little confidence. She had been one of the team teaching on the Pulmonary Rehab course, and had an immediate, glib answer for everything, whether or not appropriate and frequently jumping in before all symptoms / circumstances etc had been given. She didn't listen, and I didn't have much time or respect for her. But I ran the phlegm problem past her all the same during the appointment, she checked my medications, picked up on the Mucodyne dosage and said "well, your prescription is still for 2 capsules 3 times a day, so give that a try."
It worked. Instant magic! So simple. Nobody else had suggested that - and it had not occurred to me either. And I've not had a hint of a problem since then, a few years ago now.
And a very valuable lesson too - even someone that I do not rate can come up trumps and give me enormous help. My prejudices took a severe knock, happily!
Actually (perhaps I misread the label?) I take 3 capsules twice a day and that is fine. Even when I've been in hospital i get the consultants to change dosage to 3 twice daily - it makes life simpler!

Hi I have emphysema and regularlyn use 3x2 tablets a day which seems to keep the mucus under control. Check with your GP before upping the dose yourself, not everyone has the same make-up. Wish you well with the GP

Thank you guys for all your comments very much appreciated. Thankfully the Dr has come back to me and agreed to up to dosage to 2 x 3 times a day. As hubby is using a Nebuliser regularly at 3 times a day (yesterday 4 times) the Dr has also prescribed Saline solution to add to the nebuliser solution, which I am advised by the Pharmacy is used when breathing is a real problem. I monitor and give him his medicine and logged as his official carer. Problem is that he was never ill before and had not seen a Dr in over 30 years. So it came as a shock to get sick. He has given up smoking over 12 years ago but unfortunately the damage had already be done.
