CARBOCISTEINE SYRUP VS CAPSULES

Happy Monday everybody! Hope you're all having a good day. After my allergic reaction to Carbosisteine syrup, my doctor has suggested I wait a couple of weeks then try Carbosisteine capsules instead. Surely the ingredients would be exactly the same in both though. Or is there a difference I don't know about?

I'm afraid that I can't get on with carbocysteine in any form. I nebulise salbutamol and isotonic saline instead and that works for me.

With bronchiectasis? That's worth thinking about. At the moment I'm inhaling the steam from endless mugs of tea.

Yes lots of us bronchs nebulise. You can buy a nebuliser and your GP should prescribe the saline and salbutamol. If you have a bronch specialist - which you really should have- they can arrange for you to trial hypertonic saline, which some find more effective and also supply a nebuliser.

yes there is a big difference. Look at section 6:1 excipients. Ie what else is in the tablet/ liquid or capsule.

Brown and Burke carbocysteine contains yellow dye to which many people are allergic.

Sanofi carbocisteine- the most recent batches- do Not contain yellow colouring.

Liquids- all contain ethanol ie alcohol as a preservative. And some contain sugar and flavouring.

I had to research this due to an allergic reaction to carbocysteine.

Whilst the active ingredients may be the same, the method of delivery means the syrup will have liquid, some form of thickener/gelling agent, preservatives and so on, whereas tablets tend to have bulking agents, stabilisers and so on.

I take thyroid meds. There are a couple of brands I just don't get along with. They make me feel queasy. All other brands are fine. It can only be the "other stuff" in those companies formulations bothering me. My repeat prescriptions now state I should not be prescribed these two named brands. As a result I always check my bag before leaving the pharmacy.

Hi ...I'm on Carbocisteine and have been for probably 3 years ... when prescribing them for me, my consultant told me they don't suit everyone but I find them very beneficial so unless there's good reason I would definitely recommend giving the capsules a try ...
