Hello Lyngal, welcome to the site. Sorry to hear you have adult onset Asthma. I come from a family of Asthmatics and also have COPD so like you find it difficult to control symptoms. I take three inhalers but still can't control the cough. Keep trying and hopefully soon you will have your symptoms under control.
I have adult onset asthma too, as did my mother, mine started after pneumonia.
I have COPD as well now, and find control difficult....I can go for months feeling ok then the cough , wheezing and tight chest starts again.
I have tried various inhalers, and it's taken a time to find one that suits me best, as I have problems with some.
I also practise my Buteyko Breathing exercises, but these are not suitable for everyone....you need to get advice first.
Yoga has helped me, and Tryfans gentle chest opening exercise. one of my asthmatic daughters has been concentrating on low and slow belly breathing ....using the nose only to warm and filter the air. I looked in the mirror the other day and noticed I was tight upper chest and throat breathing so I have been trying to relax those muscles. ...not easy.
Hi Lyngal. I'm sorry about your asthma. I've had asthma all my life, but it wasn't until my late twenties that I would say I got it under control. There are various combinations of inhalers and some suit some people better than others, so do ask if you can try something else. I currently have sirdupla, not fostair, plus montelukast.
However, I have found more recently that it is not just the asthma meds that help. As well as breathing exercises as suggested by knitter, I have found that other things were contributing, particulaly allergies. I am very careful to take antihistamines, to avoid any places where people are smoking (even being in a lift with someone who has 'been out for a fag') can set me off and to keep away from animals, which are particularly bad for me. I also have taken up a gluten free/low sugar diet. I've no idea if this is also helping, but I am currently feeling healthier than ever and have halved my steroids with no ill effects.
Good luck, Monkey
Welcome Lyngal
I hear what you are saying, believe me. It seems the Ventolin, Pro air, and the other inhalers out there are a waste of money and time if you have something a little deeper than Bronchitis or mild asthma. I have tried nearly all in the past 7-8 years and none have done me a bit of good. I also use meds in a nebulizer 3 -4 times a day and really don't see a benefit from that. Could it be that doctors and the manufacturers of these products are off? I have talked with many people and have yet to find one person who feels relief. Just doesn't add up. I also do prednisone and although it opens my lungs, it has it's hang ups. Good luck to you and get well soon.
Thank you at the moment being on a longer course of prednisone my breathing isn't too bad it's when I stop them I work in a primary school so open to all kinds of coughs and colds and other nasty bugs so it's one step forward 2 steps back. Roll on July when I break up for the summer only the pollen to deal with then π
Hi Lyngal and welcome. My asthma is very mild and easily controlled - except in the tree pollen season, like NOW!
Hey there hun so I know exactly how u are feeling I am on exactly the same inhalers as you are I currently have a chest infection which is a bugger I had a bad attack on Friday which resulted in me having to call an ambulance now I'm on 8 prednisolone a morning i also have montelukast which I find mildly ease symptoms at night if I can help with anything I will I always seem to get chest infections too and suffer with hayfever
When you say 8 prednisone what strength is each one?
5 mg each
Chrissyb26 .
Luckily I only need prednisone about once a year. On it now as chest infections hang around forever in different stages of severity. In Australia we do 25mg twice a day for 2days and then 25 mg A day for 3 days.
We keep a small amount of tablets at home for emergency . Also I've never had to go to hospital for asthma only pneumonia once (with asthma ) for a week. Keep on breathing. I've had it since I was 18 months so going ok at 73.
Oh no hope your feeling better soon Chrissy so far I've managed to avoid hospital and just gone to Gp ( pretty good getting appointment) but last flare ups the Dr said you should have called an ambulance increase ventolin 6 puffs every 2 hours and if needing more hospital. Hate making a fuss but it's something I've got to overcome
I am exactly the same hun havnt called an ambulance in a long time for myself but I was at the point where I just thought bugger it I need help! Lol u will overcome it hun
Oh and this was after taking 8 puffs of fostair and 16 of ventolin they just wasn't working ππ
I also take a lot of ventolin for mild bronchiectasis as it helps clear a bit of stuff out. Early days of ventolin they said only 2 puffs every 4 hours . So I was doing that for years until recently or until pneumonia happened. Hope I never need an ambulance even though they say that's what they are there for!
5 mg
