Disappointed

So disappointed ciprofloxacin hasn't cleared pseudomonas. Atteneded clinic today, Consultant advised hospital for 14 days for iv antibiotics. Not looking forward to this but if it cleared it I shouldn't complain . Has others found this cures this bug would appreciate your answers. He also wants another ct scan.

Hi Majt. Unfortunately it's very difficult to get rid of pseudomonas. It sounds as if you're having the correct eradication regime, which is oral cipro followed by 2 weeks IVs. You'd usually be given another course of cipro after that. Often though, people find they're still colonised with it, as it's a nasty bacteria which forms biofilms in the lungs, which antibiotics cannot penetrate. BUT! don't worry too much, even if this happens, many of us who are colonised are able to control it, usually by nebulising colomycin. I've been doing this at least 6 years and am still reasonably hale & hearty 😀 A few people cannot tolerate colomycin but even then there are other antibiotics which can be nebulised. Also, clinical trials of inhaled cipro are well advanced so it won't be long before that's an option too. Anything you want to know, just ask.

Pseudamonas seems to be a bug you have to live with, all these drugs keep it under control but do not eradicate it.

Foxy everyone is different, but I think you will find that the advice that Hanne gave to Majt is the method mostly used for Psuedomonas. that is Ciprofloxicin ( Usually a very large dose ie 750 x 2 for 14 days) then if that fails IV antibiotics. with possibly nebulised colomycin for stubborn cases. Your consultant may use other methods and antibiotics, and if they work for you fantastic. but they are not the most prescribed course of action for Psuedo .

I too have Pseudomonas contracted at Xmas when I stayed in Hospital over night with suspected Pneumonia. Consultant will not treat me until my high dose of steroids are down to acceptable levels which takes time as I have been on 40 mg a day for a very long time. He suggests using ciprofloxacin. I only hope it will work. Best of luck and keep us informed,
