Does anyone know how these pills ACTUALLY MAKE YOU FEEL MORE HUNGRY ? , and as a consequence put on extra weight very fast indeed , I've never understood it , - I've always thought- if your hungry or NOT hungry - that's an end to it , but swallow a few of these dam pills for breathing difficulties, etc, and I'me ready to consume a whole tin of choccy biscuits and the tin and all ! ....mind you , my breathing greatly improves ,and mucus production virtually disappears ! , but within a few weeks having consumed the quoter of steroids, - it all starts again - the dream is over , and so is my tum , over my trousers !!! ... blast !

Taking steroids make your hart go faster so .you need more food more air .feel like your hart beating faster been on steroids for 12 month you put weight on too gone from 61g. 65g ...and you get a belly the size of pot belly pig..

As far as I was led to understand it affect the part of the brain that signals hunger. You aren't actually hungry but your brain is telling you that you are. As Sassy says its a 'false hunger' but one that is very difficult to control. It also redistributes fat around the body so it goes on your belly and top of your back.

Prednisolone stimulates the release of amino acids from the body.

Without getting too technical (but let me know if you want me to), it works on the hypothalamus gland; you retain water and due to increase blood glucose levels, your appetite for sugar and starches is increased.

In short, the release of amino acids stimulates hunger by stimulating the hypothalamus.

Additonally, but this I would say is more of a long term side effect (>3 weeks), Pred. leads to a redistribution of body fat to places that are undesirable: e.g., the classic "moon face" but also back of neck and abdomen.

I had the same problem. It is the bloody Prednisolone. After affects are. High blood sugar, feet legs swell. Skin goes very red, feel very tired, hard to sleep. Bruised skin. Difficulty breathing, I have had all these things. I have cut them down from 2 X 3 times a day to now 1 per day. And I am starting to feel little better. I class these as a killer.

They are a Dangerouse steroid not the same as bodybuilders take.

Get off them,ask your Doc for other med.

My doc first said it was caused by my taking aspirin for so long. But reading Prensison on the Net. Got it all the info from that big hospitality USA. Mayo Clinic. After 2 weeks I am blown to 1 per day. I am starting to feel a lot better.

I never ever suffered from high blood sugar until long term on this shit. My sugar reading and more or less back to acceptable levels. I have now got to give the smokes up once and for all.

I cut these down on my own decision not the Doc.

Shaurene I think that's what I'll do Good luck on giving up on the smokes I did it I think anybody can I smoked 27years I'm 48 and 2yrs smoke free on Oct 5 ,Nicolette gum and the will to quit😃

I'm on high dose steroids had chest pain stiffness hair comming out eating more and fuller face and cramps in stomach been told got to keep taking the steroids

Oh dear Jane - so sorry to read about your problems with those " Dam Steroids" - I know all drugs have side effects , yours do sound a bit extreme , the only prob I have is a little bit chubbier in the face - mini Chip Munk ! , but that's all, oh , and perhaps a slight increase in appitite , but that's all .. I have to take ONE 7.5 mg STEROID every day , to help with the breathing , they certainly help and cut down on the production of Mucus as well , .I've never heard of symptons of Steroids you describe - they really are unfortunate ...is there no other drug you can replace them with ? ..does your Doctor know of these probs ? ....could the strength and quantity be reduced slightly, so as to reduce the side effects ? -- good luck , will be thinking of you - God bless - Vittorio ..

hi vittorio my doctor said there's only steroids if I have scarring but I told him I know there's other drugs so I'm changeing doctors my symptoms came on after starting on the steroids although I've been on these drugs before but not on so many I started at 40mg aday about 6weeks ago I eat more on them though my face looks like an hamster now in the cheeks thanks for your message god bless jane

@jane5 What does do u take? I've been up to 20mg aday starting in2014 down to 10mg back up to 20mg a day slot of weight gain pain in legs

I was started on 40mg 6weeks ago then 2weeks after 35mg now30mg aday I get chest discomfort and breathlessness since being on them stomach cramps and upset stomach numb feelings in my face doctor said my. Illness is dangerous and I've got to keep taking the prednisolone because of my Lungs I also have trycuspid vaLve regurgitation mild at the moment but get bad palpitations on my meds jane

jane5 Eat all the time only weigh 110 all my life 5feet tall on Prednisone I weigh131 they say the weight makes my feet swell now they say I'm pre diabetic along with chf I took myself off of no pills (did it on Jan 5 I went to the doc no real low something just weren't right so I stopped taking them told my lung doc then he said don't take them up is fine haven't took one since Docs are Great but who knows your body better than you They make they living keeping us on all this mess and coming back and forth finding something different how come you didn't find it the first time Without patients we wouldn't need Docs😀
