So my favorite place is sat at my big kitchen table with a pot of tea (I'm from the north of England lol) and either watching TV or reading posts on here. I can be sat for 2hrs or more πΆπΆ....so when I get up to do something, like just now, I went downstairs to see if the dryer had stopped.....there was grass in the hall so I swept it up, then bent down to sweep it onto the dustpan and when I got up I was slightly breathless. ..the thing I did wrong was (I feel it was anyway ??) I tried to get a deep breath....couldn't get it and started hyperventilating! !!!! luckily my friend heard me and spoke to me until I calmed down but I feel if she hadn't been here it would have been a 999 call again....or would it ???? Would I have eventually calmed down on my own?? Is it only when it's an infection that I would actually need oxygen etc ??? Im beginning to have these attacks (panic ???) with every step I take (haha who's starting singing the police song ππ) Thank you for reading my long and a bit jumbled post. love to you all xx

panic attack with every step it seems...
That must be so scary alvorite and l do feel for you. Do you do the pursed lip breathing?
Others may be along soon to offer advice so try not to worry.
Take care xxxx
Hi
The problem is bending down "which compressed your diaphragm making it harder to breath" plus the excertion of sweeping. If it is a task you normal do, you can get a long handle dustpan.

Yes you can resolve a panic attack your self, sit down arms on you thigh hands up, if not suited you can rest your hands on your knees. Fix you eyes on a fixed point and using pursed lip breathing think to your self " slow down slow down" and your breathing will come down. Don't think negatively.
A useful breathing technique when performing a task is Blow and Go. You stop to breath in and perform any task on the exhale takes some practice but does work.
alvorite it's a strange and scary feeling that inhale breath that gets stuck it's only happened once so far not something I want to repeat so I do empathize with you it's good you had your friend there with you to help take care x
It's happened to me a few times. I am frozen to the spot and can't move. Then my breath comes back. I still feel wobbly for a while though.
It was very frightening for you. What a good job your friend was close by. I read a good tip on here recently about bending down to pick things up, and I don't know who posted it but thankyou. Breathe out before bending to pick something up. It works
Excellent advice from others for you.
xx
Stone's advice is spot on, I use these methods as I cannot bend over and breath. Getting socks and shoes on is a pain, literally.
At work,I'll lean on a trolley or something and take a few breaths and then get on with it.
I must loose some beer belly fat and then it will resolve itself I think.
A lady, a member of our Breath Easy Group told me at the last meeting that she has panic attacks when breathless and has refused to be taken to hospital for treatment. It has now been agreed with her consultant that she uses a spacer with ventolin and she can take up to 20 puffs at a time, says she never gets to 10 before breathing normally. Of course it seems an extreme method but it does work for her. Joyce
Hello alvorite . I so understand. Sometimes not being able to get the air in or out well can make me slightly panicky too. I see you have a short brush. So bending down in the first place would have winded you some. I got myself a brush with a long handle. More of a broom really. Just so I wouldn't have to bend. I even have a chair in the bathroom for when I wash my dog because bending winds me so badly.
I hope you are having a relaxing weekend. Do take it easy.

They tell us to use our Ventolin if we get a sudden bout of SOB. I use a method I found on a Canadian COPD site. This is the address for the site. There are many helpful videos and suggestions for controlling our illness.

I suffered with panic attacks ended up at hospital to be treated for copd then a doctor realised I was having a panic attack I was put on mirtazapine and touch wood the attacks have stopped I found looking at a object and repeating the same word helps to bring the attack to a stop
Glad that you are okay and cheerful about it.
I have been getting these a lot recently partly because of an infection, partly I think by not moving enough. I try to move even if it is just to get up and walk a couple of steps every hour - even set my alarm to remind myself to do this (although do not as I should do it every day) but do feel it helps as otherwise I can sit for 3 or 4 hours without moving and then when I do it seems such a strain. also because sometimes I feel I cannot control the upper chest gasping for breath I press on my rib cage to stop it expanding and make sure I am breathing from lower down and do the pursed lips to exhale. I also sit and wait until my breath gets under control and/or I try and think of others things so the panic subsides - it is hard and it is very scary but when you live alone not much else you can do - for reasons I won't go into now I have a morbid fear of returning to my county hospital so phoning an ambulance or 999 is a no go for me - hope some of that might help - guess we all have our little ways of dealing with it - good luck xxx
You are the 1st person Undine that seems to understand exactly what I mean....if I sit and watch all the soaps on a Monday for eg then wen I get up I jst can't breathe....oh thanks for replying it's so reassuring to know you are out there ππ
pleased it helped alvorite it is so frightening and exhausting to be forever it seems talking ourselves down from the edge of panic just shows how strong mentally we have to be something people do not understand but we can do it - you can do it just try and get past the panic and wait till it passes sit still think breathe do whatever you need it will pass and yes try and move a bit more easier said than done - take care xxx
Panic attacks are not nice most people with COPD has panic attacks so pleased your ok
Panic attacks are the pits! π© learning breathing techniques and practicing them when feeling any anxiety would be good. Yoga, Tai Chi gentle and beneficial πHope you get some help as I know that it can spiral out of control.
