I'm new here. I am coping with emphasima.
My saline nebulizer causes phlegm to collect in my vocal cords making me hoarse.
I would like to find a gargle or diet to minimize this.

Hi Harlan,
Afraid I'm not knowledgeable to advise but there are plenty of others who will be able to help you.
Best wishes
Inhale propolis vapour and you should regain back your voice and clear your phlegm.
Hi Loristan I too have phlegm (for 4 years) and have to cough it up using a nebuliser with salt solution and then active cycle of breathing technique. Could you tell us more about propolis vapour. I have not heard of this and cannot find anything on Google.
Dear Sarcoid, first you need to purchase a dehumidifier which would change any liquid into vapour. Next, you could source from Internet for the propolis extracts but must be in liquid form, not in capsule powder form which are usually marketed by Brazilian companies. However in the event that you still cannot source for one , I will be pleased to send you 100 ml of the propolis extracts. You only need to use 10 ml of the extracts each time and once a day. There are many websites that give a good narration of propolis , including WebMD. Dozens of respiratory related cases such as pneumonia , bronchitis , lung infection have shared they benefited from inhaling the propolis vapour. Latest being a 64 years old woman who is undergoing dialysis , has very high blood pressure , high sugar level and acute wounds and contracted lung infection due to her poor health and her general health conditions has shown remarkable improvements after inhaling the propolis vapour. I hope it clarifies and wish you speedy recovery. Thanks.
Hi Harlan, and welcome to the site. Sorry I can't help you but just wanted you to know it's great you've joined us.
Hi Harlan you have come to the right place for advice. I have copd and used to struggle with phlegm my Dr prescribed a capsule called Carbocisteie which thins the horrible stuff and clears the airways, but now I am on a long term antibiotic called Azithromycin which has nearly rid me of the stuff completely. I hope you find a solution. Anyway welcome to the site I am from the UK
Good luck

Hi Sue, I was on azithromycin for approximately 3 years up until it eventually became resistant. Drs recommended that prolonged use of antibiotics would cause me more damage than any good. Then my Dr substituted it with another. Perhaps antibiotics come with a packaged deal. Lil benefits and good great side effects. Please consult your doctor regarding the hazards of consuming antibiotics for a long term. Wish you all the best. May you stay sound and healthy forever.
Thank you for your reply but I am only on 1 tablet every other day I have blood tests frequently to ensure everything is ok, it was the consultant who prescribed it as I had pneumonia, but in the process of X-rays and scans they found a tumour on my lung so I had radium but would like to report that everything is going ok, I am enjoying life thanks to the Drs. I report my up dates on here and hope it helps others. Thank you once again and wish you well

You sound so happy with life. I'm glad. Keep up the optimism dear. When I first found out about my illness I was devastated. Was put on antidepressants. Somehow got over it. Even my upper lobe of right lung is nothing but a mere tumor(non cancerous). For now it seems to have paused acting up. I've accepted myself as I'm. Somehow my quality of life improved and I'm so grateful to God.
I take Carbocistine capsules that help with removing mucus. There are also breathing techniques that can help.
I suffer with the dreaded phlem i take carbocistine but i also gargle with salt water hooe this helps
Welcome Harlan

Harlan I suffered with this too in the past, the Dr suggested that I gargle with Betadine gargle and mouthwash solution. It helped me a lot. Moreover ensure that you drink plenty of water(no substitute) throughout the day. I drink more than 8 litres a day to keep myself well hydrated. Water is my only medicine as of now. I've copd stage 2. And the only medicine I intake for it is water. No inhaler, nebulisers, antibiotics, bronchodilators, absolutely nothing. I don't know how my conditions improved. But all praise be to God I feel better. May God bless you all.
Pursed lips breathing is another great way to release the troublesome mucus. Make sure you do breathing exercises.
Hi Harlan,
I also have copd and suffer with the phlem in my vocal chords. I use an otc med containing guafenessin, comonally sold under the name, musinex. It actually clears me up well enough to sing along with my cd's while driving. Some days, without it people can't understand me when I speak. I usually use it 1-2 times/day, (recommended dose) . Some would be happy that I keep the truck windows closed. Good luck
Harlan: some people have mentioned breathing techniques. I too use a nebuliser with salt solution and then do Active Cycle of Breathing Technique (huffing) to cough up the phlegm. You could look it up on the internet - some hospital websites explain it and there are some videos.
Hi...I've had copd for 16 years and was extremely hoarse. My favorite thing is to sing in my church choir and I was losing my voice. I stopped taking all dairy products and it helped tremendously. I could sing high notes and low notes. When the weather changed my hoarseness came back. I Googled Mucusless Diet. If you follow this with a grain of salt, u will do well. The swallowing of Cayenne really works, but it tastes awful and I'm afraid it'll put a hole in my stomach. Good luck!
Hi I'm new to your gang call me nitram in answer to Harlan gargle with an antiseptic mouthwash worth a try really enjoy your exchanges copd lives with me alone sometimes tired and weary but come on our country needs us 68 years of age and fighting xx
One of the common inhalers (can't remember which one I'm afraid) is known for making people hoarse and dry. When I'm in my singing group I sometimes try and sing a note and absolutely NOTHING comes out
When you've just used your inhaler, apparently it helps to gargle with water, rinse and spit out
