Spironolactone Warning.

I thought this would be of interest to some of you. Owing to excessive fluid retention I was put on Spironolactone 25mg in September whilst in hospital, it seems this drug works alongside Furosemide to get rid of fluid. It went fine until early December, I started with tenderness in my Pectoral Muscles (boobs) , the nurse on the Pulmonary Rehab course thought it would be muscle problems. As they keep finding a suggestion in my blood that I have cancer, although CT Scan showed up nothing, I was still wondering if it could be Cancer. I mentioned this to my Heart Consultant in early January and immediately he said, 'it's the Spironolactone' , the Heart Nurse said don't take anymore. She has put me on Ramipril 1.25 mg, no problems with this so far and whilst the tenderness is a lot better it's still there and it's 2 weeks since I stopped the Spironolactone. It seems it is common with this drug so beware.

Thanks for the info. We put so much trust in our drs but we do need also not to be afraid to question things. Take care.

As the Heart Nurse said, they should tell people when they put them on this particular drug, nobody did.

What exactly are you saying Spironolactone causes? I've been on this for the last 7 years. Should I stop taking it?

Different strokes for different folks, ws. Some have no problems whilst others get all of the side effects going. It also depends on other medications taken/other conditions you may have. Tender breasts are a common side effect with this drug. Check it out here:

All I'm saying is that if you get tender boobs and you are on this drug then see your GP. This applies to men and women. As the Heart Nurse said it does happen a lot, but not to everyone, so you are ok. Best wishes.

Thanks Toci. The tender moobs are no problem, but the other info is quite scary. Big Pharma have a lot to answer for.

Hi FarmerD, Yes we can laugh at these things, men with boobs, but then there is the very serious side, I wish you all the very best for the future, good luck.
