Slow and easy as most of us I think can not run .start to jog slow then speed up but as soon as you start to fell it getting hard slow down and stop or you might regret it best I can offer you
Hello, welcome
With running I think it would be similar to any normal person starting up.
Start with walking, move up gradually to power walking, gradually introduce very short jogs and build up slowly the jogging periods. You need to build up really slowly and don't force yourself yet.
As with healthy people seek doctors advice first.
You may find breathing techniques for novice runners on YouTube. You can certainly find clues of breathing exercises fir lung health.
Good luck.
PS BLF member Hungrtyhorse ran a marathon or half marathon recently, why don't you send her a private message for information?
Hi do you have copd? Another lung disease? A lot depends on your lung function. If you are new to this my advice is not to run before you can walk... Walk at a level which makes you not too breathless to hold a conversation but too breathless to sing. This is the same for any exercise you do.
The other thing a professional runner told me, is to run on soft surfaces ie grass or sand as much as possible and not concrete. This is to lessen the impact on your joints otherwise you might get joint problems in the future. x
Hi Lexi
Welcome to the site. You don't really tell us anything about yourself. Do you have copd? If so, what stage are you?
Will be much easier to help you, if we know your diagnosis.

Hello leximasters
I do the Race For Life 5Km run every year for Cancer Research.
I cannot run fast anymore, so l walk it...very briskly.
I can only do this by keeping up my fitness levels.
Go for long brisk walks as many times a week as you can manage.
You don't have to run to be fit, and remember you have just given up the ciggies, so your lungs will still be clearing out all the gunge !
Slowly, Slowly does it, and you will not do any damage, and you will build up your fitness level.
Good luck

Hi leximasters35, welcome to the forum. Sorry I am one of those who can't run, but can still walk so would think exercise what ever style should be started slowly and worked up, in rehab we do two weeks at one pace then increase. Its early days for you so take care. What lung condition do you have? if you don't mind me asking. I have not smoked for over ten years but still can't run or walk without being breathless some days.. Keep up the no smoking well done
No i dont have copd
I can't even get dressed without getting breathless never mind run. Do you have any kind of lung disease you say you don't have COPD.
