My dad has Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis it's a very recent diagnosis. He's 66. Has anyone tried the serrapeptase or nattokinase enzymes? And does anyone know the exclusion criteria for lung transplant for the UK?

Morning Jaine.

I am sorry to hear about your father. It is horrible disease.

I haven't tried Serrapeptase but I was told about it some time ago. I looked it up and it seems to be well regarded in Germany, I believe there have been some positive tests. All easy enough to research on line. To be honest I am always a little cautious about such things; I tend to be very conventional in my drug allegiance.

I think — only think, mind — the age cut off point for lung transplants is 65. But don't quote me and these things change all the time. It may depend on other factors like the fitness of the patient and comorbidities. There was a woman over a 100 the other day who had a hip replacement, the surgeon said he made the choice because the woman was so obviously fit and well. Again NICE guidelines on the matter can be accessed on line.

There are plenty of people in this forum who have IPF and can advise you and your father.

All the best and let us know how things develop.

K xx

Just saying hello Nursejane. I don't have IPF and don't know people who do so I'm not able to help. But there are quite a few here who Im sure will be able to. Your dad is at an early stage and hopefully your research and care will stand him in good stead.

Very warm wishes to both of you.

I have IPF and have never been given these drugs,65 is not a cut off anymore,it mostly depends on your fitness levels and other co morbidities I am 65 and although I was turned down for transplant due to a patulous oesphagus that means it's baggy,I asked for a second opinion and they are prepared to do some tests, there are a few of us with IPF on this site but I suggest you join Pulmonary Fibrosis UK on facebook,we are 2000 members on there, the support for each other is tremendous,I hope you are being treated with one of the specialist hospitals for IPF,it's a real shitty disease and I hope you are near the support groups that have been set up recently..Sooki.

Hello nursejane your DAD will need your support as he's recently diagnosed because somehow it just doesn't register how serious IPF is at first. I'm 75 and my lung. Specialists told me a transplant can be carried out if you fit the criteria for one and the heart and other organs especially are in good nick .But cannot bring a person s age into it. There will be people who have had lung transplant can give you more details on the pulmonary fibrosis forum. I tried serrapeptace which is a health supplement but it didn't help me much there are other things as well to try he will just have to try whatever s on offer and see if it helps. I was diagnosed in 2011 and have gone worse especially this year so being optimistic is very important and trying new treatments although none can cure IPF good luck .

Thank you and good luck x

Hi i have IPF and emphysema, had a lung transplant assessment end of last year and due to a narrowing of two artieries plus my age they said my age means I would not qualify to go on the transplant list, I was 61 at the time of the assessment. Saw a heart specialist a few months ago who the said the narrowing of the arteries was not bad enough, having a kind of second opinion, so had another CT scan a couple weeks ago and going for a lung function test in November and then seeing the consultant end of November.

You have to be 100% fit and healthy in every aspect of your health bar your lungs to get on the lung transplant list.
