i had a near one when i was a young lad, we were sledging down a steep hill, aiming for a small wooden bridge over the burn [the stream] so that it would take us half way up the other side,

i missed the bridge, went right into the ice cold water, never forgot that

Yes we did have the best years we would play out in the woods till 10pm at night during school holidays the only harm that came to us was falling out of the tree. I remember the local GP he would always call in and have a cup of tea with mom when he finished his home visits he always laughed at me and said I would keep orthopaedics in a job.

The summer we spent all day out doors swimming in a lake or in the woods and winter we spent all day on the sledge the only time I used my bedroom was to sleep

much the same as me o/a/m , the only time i used my bedroom, was when i was called in [reluctantly ] for bed. we used to wander miles, turnips from the field, roasting potatoes on a fire, apples from some orchard

swimming in an old pond, in among the woods, now the same place is a nature reserve,,, it was a far better nature reserve then, without spending thousands on it !!,, changed days i'm afraid

We were lucky we had a proper swimming pool until the council sold to some religious group with no thought for us no change now they are still the same
