I was diagnosed with severe asthma late last year and am having trouble with heartburn. I have stopped eating bread which seems to help but now it has come back again. Can anyone tell me what other foods to avoid please. I do take gaviscon to help ease it. Many thanks

I had problems with heartburn too. I think it is too much bread and flour type things - like cakes and biscuits. However, I had a fibroid which was also helping to cause this and once I had that dealt with it wasn't quite so bad but I still find that if I have bready type things too often or too much in one day it is back. The other day i had toast for breakfast, half a bread roll with my lunch and then quarter of a pizza for a snack tea and got it so I need to be careful. If it is really bad and you get it a 3 or 4 times a week without over indulging then speak to your Doc it could be an allergy or something else. Sometimes it can be caused by medication too - painkillers especially so if you are on prescription painkillers and these are found to be the cause your Doc will be able to prescribe something to take with them to help alleviate the effect on your stomach. Read the side effects part of the leaflet with your medication and find out if it is a side effect. A good tip is to not eat anything 4 hours before lying down or going to bed and drink water with your food. Hope this helps.

So, keep taking the gaviscon it is the best on the market as far as this household is concerned.

Take care

Sian

Thank you so much for you helpful advice cheers

Caffeine is a known irritant as is chocolate. I have cut down the number of coffees I have in a day, drink more water. Still have some chocolate though. I take Gaviscon too.

Hi Starveycat. I used to suffer with very bad heartburn for years. The Dr sent me for an investigation and it was found I have a Hiatus Hernia. I'm not saying this is what you might have but I was prescribed Omeprazole. I hardly ever have heartburn now it's usually only if I have been silly eating lots of things I shouldnt. Perhaps you should mention to the Dr that you are suffering. They may prescribe you what they hailed as the wonder drug. I certainly think it's wonderful as I can eat a lot more than I used to.

Acidic juices, etc., is what gets me... I just suck Rennies when I feel the heartburn and it does the trick....bread seems to ease my heartburn - we are all so different from one another aren't we?? :)

Very true as bread seems to be the culprit in my case and what is nicer than a salad sandwich in this weather.. Thank you for replying

A lot of people with lung conditions that may cause a cough or erratic breathing. Can get an Hiatus Hernia which in turn can cause Reflux. It is in my case helped with Omeprazole the shop bought goods can help for a time but this are more long term.

I hope you get it sorted as it is not pleasant.

I've personally never found anything (and believe me, I've tried them all) to beat a teaspoonful of bicarbonate of soda in a little water to beat indigestion and heartburn.

Obviously if this is very frequent and on-going you should have a word with your GP, but for instant relief, you can't beat the old ways! :-D

Avoid acid foods. ie citrus, vinegars, tomatoes.

I quieten my stomach with plain live yogurt. At the moment it has flared up a bit so I buy Ranitidine which really realy helps. It used to be called Zantac & very expensive. Now supermarkets can sell it uder their own name, often called 'Indigestion Tablets'. Just check the ingredients and please read the leaflet for contraindications. P

edit: I also cut out fat. The tiniest bit of butter is a nono for me
