Another From Walter de la Mere

Slowly, silently, now the moon

Walks the night in her silver shoon;

This way, and that, she peers, and sees

Silver fruit upon silver trees;

One by one the casements catch

Her beams beneath the silvery thatch;

Couched in his kennel, like a log,

With paws of silver sleeps the dog;

From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep

Of doves in silver feathered sleep

A harvest mouse goes scampering by,

With silver claws, and silver eye;

And moveless fish in the water gleam,

By silver reeds in a silver stream.

VASHTI, you are such a great person because if I got down, I have only to read your wonderful posts. I mean to go them all to have a second read. I woke this morning feeling really low and felt inspired straight away after reading your latest. I was feeling lonely, sad depressed, you name it, but it does help to come in and have a "listen".

Living here in New MIlton, the people in general are so friendly but the neighbours are quite depressing in their attitude to newbies. SO think positive, go for the friendly ones!! xxxx

I enjoy poetry, know this one but always worth another read.

I am glad that as a schoolgirl, I learnt a few poems by heart. do children still do that, I wonder.

One that appealed to me began

Up the airy mountain, down the rushey glen,

We daren't go ahunting for fear of little men.

Thanks for that Vashti - it's the one I part-quoted yesterday but blessed if I could remember the rest of it, so now I know it's couched not crouched and the last lines are heavenly.

Learned this one at school. Thanks for the memory. Don't think children do rote learn poems any more, sadly.

Thanks. That brought back memories! Had forgotten that one. Did it in primary school for an elocution contest that we had to go into town to perform. It was a big day for me as we were rarely allowed to go into town! Remembered some of the poem.
