I'm wondering which antibiotic is best for us with copd, Zithromax, or amoxicillin.

Hi Batbara, I think different antibiotics are used to treat differing aspects of infection in COPD; rather than stable COPD. There are a large range of antibiotics available. Amoxicillin is usually the first line defence in treating an acute chest infection but sometimes this may be changed if the infection is resistant to it.

Zithromax, is often used in Bronchiectasis or COPD for 3 times a week, for up to 6 months for resistant, recurrent infections.

A happy New Year to you. Love Margaret x

Personally I wouldn't touch Amoxicillin with a barge pole and have refused it for two years (after it never ever having worked over several years, prolonging infections).

My recue pack is Zithromax/Azithromycin as a cure - not as a preventive as px in Bronchiectasis.

Hi Peege, I have COPD & Amoxicillin no longer works for me. After major surgery for lung cancer I experienced several bouts of infections ( Pneumonia, Chest & Pleurisy) & lots of different antibiotics & steroids, I was prescribed Zithromax/Azithromycin as a preventative in 2013. It worked very well but now I am to use it as a 'cure' for an acute infection & if it doesn't clear after first treatment resume 3x week for 6 months. love Margaret x

Thank you for your replies. It's always good to hear how others treat their ailments.

Hi I usually take doxyclycline and it works well for me. I can't take amoxocillan as am allergic to penicillan. My rescue pack has steroids (prednisilone) and doxy. x

Zithromax is Azithromycin which they give as a maintenance dose I have it 3 times a week, Amoxicillin isn't strong enough for me I'm usually given Co- Amoxiclav.

I was diagnosed 10 years ago and find that a sputum sample only will determine the best antibiotic to use at any given time. I do not think that one antibiotic covers all aspects of COPD exacerbations. Nothing stays the same anyway. Doctors seem happy to offer any antibiotic that takes their fancy but so reluctant to have a sputum sample to be sure of what they are up against. I lots of wasted money could be saved this way along with extra visits to the surgery.

I use Doxycycline and Charithromycin alternately on each separate infection, if I get infections, which are few and far between, thank goodness !

not amoxicillin. depends what the infection is. A sputum sample will tell you. I have had 7 antibiotics since January to treat pseudomonas/ pneumonia. If you are concerned ask GP. All the best.
