Blood Donors

Just realised I've got an appointment booked to give blood tomorrow - does anyone know if I can still donate now I've been diagnosed with COPD? I rang the Blood Transfusion Service but the lady I spoke to said COPD wasn't on her list of medical condition so she would get a consultant to ring me, but I've not had a call back - thanks

Fairly sure you will be ok.

Think it's just the diseases to do with blood eg hepatitis , anaemia and various blood born infections where there would be a problem.

As long as they think it is safe for you to donate I don't see why not. But if you are severe then they might be concerned about lack of oxygen if they take some blood. x

Interesting responses above. As soon as I mentioned "emphysema" I was removed from the blood donor list. I'd check at the session if I was you.

Well Wendywoo I was stopped from giving blood a long time ago due to taking blood pressure pills they said, so I read the link Scrobbity sent and there's not much guide on there in respect of taking drugs. So I would ask at your local blood donor session

I have avoided giving blood, because I have bronchiectasis (with lots of bugs floating around in me) and I have neutropenia ( a lack of white blood cells. I don't think anyone knowing this would like my blood!

Wendywoo, you probably won't have a call back, this is holiday period and consultants meet each other on a golf course in Spain!

Thanks for all your replies - I rang again this morning and was eventually told I could donate as long as I felt ok

Had to go through the "Spanish Inquisition" medical questions at the donation but I finally got to make my 24th donation - only one more to go till my Silver Award!
