My father who is 81 has just been diagnosed with hyper inflated lung. He has been prescribed antibiotics and a further check-up.

He has suffered chest infections for a few years and always gets prescribed antibiotics which I suspect he is now pretty immune to? I have read it could be caused by cystic fibrosis or emphysema? He had a chest Xray at the hospital and test with the GP. What do you think the likely causes are of hyper-inflated lung, and why has he been prescribed a month's supply of antibiotics which he has to take before the nurse sees him? He has always had funnel chest and I wonder if this may be part of the problem? Thank you. Jenny

Hi Lamornaboat

Sorry to hear your father has hyper inflated lung. Has he seen a consultant to diagnose what the cause is? I would have thought in view of your father's age cystic fibrosis, although possible is not probable. CF is genetic and therefore he would have had it since birth. A simple sweat test from your consultant would rule it out. I believe copd to be a reason for hyper inflated lung, but you really do need to talk to your GP and get a definite diagnosis.

Why do you assume the bugs he is growing are immune to the anti-biotics he is being prescribed?

I hope you get some clarification and your father improves sooon.

love cx
