I have quite sever copd and recently flew to to Texas. I had assistance at the airports and made sure I had my inhalers to hand. The flight was 10 hours and I was slightly more breathless and used my ventolin more than normal but I was fine.On the return flight I slept a lot and my breathing was better,I think the fresh air in Texas did me good
lynn60, I think its best if you asked your gp about this ,as theres fit to flight tests, im only stage 2, or ring the blf up ,10am,03000 030 555,were a nurse will help you on this, also other members will be along soon to advice you,but I hope you have a nice holiday, xxx
I had to have a fit to fly test and had to breathe oxygen through a special machine that simulated what cabin air would be like. My oxygen levels had to stay above 86% to pass.
Hi Lynn60
I would ask yr GP for a fit to fly certificate as you do not want to get tithe airport & the airline refuses to take you,
You can also arrange for oxygen on the plane it was £100. Each way if you do not use it then you get your money back not sure how long it takes may be best to speak to the travel agency , also make sure your insurance covers you for all x good luck hoe you have a happy holiday
I have RLD and I have been told I have to have a fly test before I fly as I could get hypoxia on the plane. As paperman36 has said make sure the insurance is aware and shop around for quotes for pre existing illness's as they can be miles apart on price.
I was also told I should not fly for long than 3.5 hours because of my heart condition
I am stage four and fly using oxygen. There are no problems as long as everything is arranged beforehand.
Hi Lynn 60, just to reassureyou, I flew to Vietnam last November and one flight was 13 and a half hours and the other from Malaya to Saigon a further 3 and a half and I was nervous but fine. I had to have a fit to fly form from my GP for the insurance people and that cost £25. I'm off to Lanzarotte next week and have booked for South Africa in the Autumn. I have emphysema stage 3 and fibrosis of my left lung as a side effect of breast cancer (radiotherapy). Check with your GP and if all well GO FOR IT !!Goodluck.
I have just got back from the Canary Islands which was a four and half hour flight, took my inhalers on board, the only prob I had was when the altitude changed slightly flying over the Pyrenees, apart from that I was fine,
