Drug can make damaged lungs regrow..........
Hi Lynhurst sounds very promising how exciting for us.Keeping everything crossed and hoping for success, and not long to wait really in the school of things. Thanks for that Lynhurst. Janexx
From 25/4/2006 old story vit A was toxic in dose for any effect.
The article dated 12th March 2014 isn't about giving Vitamin A as a cure. It's about what scientists discovered from using it some time ago.
Quote:
"Pharmaceuticalcompanies then began to trace the specific molecule within vitamin A that interacted with the lungs, in order to develop it as a drug that would work on humans. During further tests on animals given the new drug, scientists found that the animals' alveoli regrew until their lungs were almost back to normal after a month".

Very intresting lets hope it works and is available one day. Thankyou for posting it.
Makes interesting reading but even if it is trialled and works it will take another year or two for GP's to hear about it then they will have to decide, is it cost effective so some will win and others will lose out
Thank you for posting this very positive news Lynhurst.
I don't have emphysema but I'm worried for the for future of two of my children who smoke, one has asthma too!
It was very good reading and explained what happens to the lungs clearly so it is also brilliant publicity and educating people - mentions BLF too, wonderful, and also the Antitrypsine Deficiency thing.
Oh that's a shame. I always want BLF to get the recognition they deserve
There must be something out there to help us with this horrible decease!
Hi all - as i had seen this thread and similar ones on various facebook COPD and Alpha1 pages, I called ADAPT at university Hospital Birmingham to get the lowdown 'from the horses mouth'. I have just got off the phone and the gist of it is as follows ; Yes this trial happened and continued through to completion. This was about a year ago. The scientists are still mulling over the results and monitoring information, and at some point in the future the trial and its findings will be written up in the medical journals.
My own take on this then is - 1. Good news that the trial happened and completed - presumably this means that the drug itself was not harmful. 2. Unlikely that an obvious 'cure' resulted otherwise we would have heard far more about it and sooner (only my opinion). 3. As it wasn't abandoned at any stage there is always the possibility of further research along those lines. 4. Be very careful when you read article in Newspapwers - it may be old news or exaggerated news.
Hope that has clarified things for you - Vanessa.
The contact details are out of date as is the article.
An excellent read, the sooner the better, thankyou for that.
This looks good lets keep everything crossed
