Does anyone with bronchiectasis get breathless even when they don't have an infection? If so what do you take for it?

Yes, I get breathless really easily and wheeze and cough most of the time. My FEV is on average 30. I have azithromycin three times a week (which doesn't seem to make any difference) but other than that nothing. Sorry. Maybe your GP could suggest something.

Hi, thanks for your reply. What is FEV?

in reply toLesleyAnne

it's my peak flow (FEV might be the wrong term) which measures peak expulsion.

Yes, I'm on 500mg Azithromycin, Seretide 500 and Salbutamol. But just can't seem to get this breathlessness under control.

Good idea from KAT22 go see the doc if you are worried about it the more you stress the worse it will get.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

I do get breathless, even without an infection (not that I'm very often without an infection these days) but I do have asthma also, but when I was younger before the asthma yes I did get breathless. I would up the inhaler or neb and do more physio.

Sprometry will give you your FEV1 (Forced Expirary Volume the amount you can exhale in 1 second) This can be given to you as a percentage, meaning if your FEV 1 was 50%, then that would be 50% of what would be considered normal for your age, sex etc.

Things like sex, age, weight etc are taken into account to give you an accurate reading.

Ah yes I do have spirometry tests, however, I must ask next time what the results are. They usually just tell me their ok! I too have asthma but this breathlessness is becoming a real pain. Finishing sentences are not possible and walking and talking is a no no and I notice I am taking an involuntary breath every now and again. I am going to the GP tomorrow.

I'm sorry to hear you cannot finish your sentences because of sob. That sounds like it needs sorting for sure. Good luck at the GPs. My consultant felt my asthma was as problematic as my bronch last week and upped my steroid inhaler. You sound similar.

Good luck LA

I get breathless without an infection and currently it is terrible with my exacerbation. I've been told to 10 minutes of exercise 3 times a day. By exercise they don't mean joining my daughter in her 5km runs just anything.

Hi Judith, I have never been told this but I am going to take your advice on board. I hope your symptoms ease soon. X

I do in fact today, has been very bad. for some reason. I take Azithromycin, symbicort, Spiriva and salbutamol. I have found it has improved since taking Spiriva though, may be worth chatting to your GP and trying that as it helped me a lot. The Azithromycin has cut down the amount of infections I have greatly.

Hy Everybody.

Does everyone heard about the salt cave before...? They doing salt therapies for people with different breathing problems. The first session is free. I have been recently with my friend who has asthma. She has 6 session so far, she is really pleased with the result. I think it's worth for a go.

Yes I've heard of it but nothing like it up here in the Highlands.

They are selling salt pipes. Maybe you can have a look on the website and order one. I have one I'm using it when I have cold or sinus pain. It's pretty good. It wasn't expensive, something around £30. But you can use it for several years. Hope it will help :) Take care!

Hi All, I saw GP today. I have another infection, lungs making lots of noise and last night I started with the chills and sweats. So disappointing but there we go. Just need to find out what it is this time. Have to use blue inhaler through spacer, can use up to 40 puffs (10 into spacer at one time).

Hey L. A a couple of years ago I was given a spacer and when I was really poorly to use ventolin as much I wanted it wouldn't do me any harm such a difference from when I first taking it years ago when told not to take it too much. Hope you get better quick. Xx
