CRP levels

can anyone offer any help with CRP levels. I had posted last week about my dad falling and he ended up being admitted. He has bronchiectasis & COPD. He's now in hospital as he had an infection too. He's in a rehab which is what he really needed and on an IV antibiotic. His CRP was 132. Anyone know if this is high/normal???

yes 132 is relatively high. It is quite common for CRP levels to rise when you have an infection. Nomal is under 10 I think. However don't panic mine have been over 300 on more than one occasion. They usually start to fall once the antibiotics kick in. Mind you sometimes us with chronic probs do have higher inflammatory markers that healthy folk so it dpends on the individual.

C-reactive proteins. Basically it tells you that there is inflammation/infection somewhere in the body

Just seen this, I see you already know the answer.

I think as your Dad is in hospital he will be in good hands and his CRP level monitored as required, why not ask whilst you are at the hospital about this. It makes sense, and to clarify what his CRP levels are, and what this may mean.

'IF';

the CRP level relates to a recent blood test, this 'COULD'

mean in medical terms :-

'C-reactive protein' these are inflammation markers in the body, which are raised in cases of infection and

'COULD' be an indication of something else going on, for which further tests are usually carried out.

I had a similar investigation recently.

But please do check with the doctor at the hospital about your concerns and clarification on the CRP levels.

Best wishes BC

CRP should be very low - in a normal person under 5. Mine is always high due to my bronchiectasis. The doctors should be able to get it under control with antibiotics and steroids - or at least that is what they give me when mine is sky high. CRP ia a non specific marker for inflammation as is ESR. Basically they just tell your doctor that you have an infection.

If you Dad is in hospital they are hopefully treating him with the correct medication. Ask to speak to the Doctor but make a list of all your questions in advance so you don't forget any!

Hope he is better soon.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Judith what would be a normal level for you. Dads normally sits around 20. I just wondered would 132 be classified as high as respiratory nurse and GP said they may not treat him in hospital
