If I have not used my laptop for a while and the screen has gone black when I go back on I have to close it down and restart to be able to get on to the net. It has always been alright before, I used to leave it for days without closing it down.
Would be grateful for any help.

If you've not switched the laptop on for a while, you need to keep updating security before surfing the net or sending and receiving email on it. First and foremost, keep doing updates, till its says your computer / system is up to date. The includes windows update (if you are with windows), your antivirus, browser, email, adobe flash etc. After updates are complete, give the laptop a full scan. Then you should be safe to use it.
I had a similar problem with my 5-year-old laptop running Vista. When left unattended for a while the screen would go dark, which is quite normal, and sometimes it came back on at the press of a key, as it should, but quite often it wouldn't and I'd have to do a restart.
I've now got into the habit of putting it into Sleep mode whenever I leave it unattended for any length of time. To 'wake it up' requires a key press, a re-entry of my password and a brief wait while it gets itself together, but it's far less hassle than a restart . . .
Have the same problem myself with the laptop, have to find the best restart option for yourself is what I found. Think it's the Microsoft security that does this.
I always hibernate mine when switching it off. This means when I turn it on next it's the same as when I turned it off. Even if I've shut it down with a web page on show.
