Hi I have recently been diagnosed with copd, I have noticed with a drop in temperature fatigue, insomnia and wheezing. Anything I can do?
Hi chriswoods and welcome. I also suffer fatigue and my breathing is not as good since the cooler weather has arrived. As others here will tell you, we have to pace ourselves. rest when we need it if possible, eat well and get some exercise, and keep warm.. Humour also helps. Joyce
The cold weather results in this for many of us Chris. Try to keep warm, wrap up well when you go out and try breathing through a scarf to warm the air before it hits your lungs. However, if the wheeze is new or worsening I would suggest a visit to your GP.
HI Chris, My husband is much worse in the cold weather and the recent drop of temperature has really hit him. His breathing becomes much worse and he is very short of breath. A couple of things help a scarf around your mouth and take it slowly. My husband finds it very difficult moving from outside to in or vice versa in the winter. We have put a remote control plug in thing on the fan heater in the bedroom because if he wakes up and its cold he really struggles to breath.
I would advise that you go to the doctor - it maybe there is medication which could help your wheeze. Perhaps a reliever inhaler. Do you use inhalers? Have you had the flu jab?
If you think your symptoms are in any worse - please go to your gp. There are lots of medications available and you there is a presumption from our gp that if we are not in touch everything is OK. Also it might be an idea to ring the BLF helpline, they might be able to help you. Take good care and look after yourself. TAD xx
too hot can`t breathe,too damp can`t breathe too cold can`t breathe, too windy can`t breathe , us sufferers of c.o.p.d have a very small window of"weather " that is ok for us ,you will get used to it, and your inhalers and tablets will help
You have all answered my question here to . I have been struggling in the evening and first thing in the morning and have started feeling the need to clear my throat although there is no thing there. I suppose it's all about learning about this disease.
ha cc how are you,yes learn as much as you can,i take 1 daily N -acetyl cystiene 600 mg,holland and barretts,pricey but in 2 years had no trouble,but we are all different ,bernicexx
Hi Chriswoods yes It is quite possible the weather and temp have affected you,It does for most on here I think,but keep an eye on yourself and maybe check with a pro.Keep well keep smiling.Janexx

Some good advice already about keeping warm, have the house temperatures around 21C day time and 18C sleeping temperature. Have hot drinks when you are feeling cold at other times drink plenty of water. Take your inhaler meds about the same time each day as prescribed. Check your technique using the inhaler meds with the respiratory nurse (through your GP surgery or at the hospital clinic) or ask your local pharmacist about the technique for the inhalers you are using.
Other things you can do further:-
Ask your doctor for a referral to pulmonary rehabilitation, you will learn loads about managing your systems and tips on how to keep yourself stable.
Concerning the insomnia and tiredness, discuss with your doctor and enquire about the possibility of being tested for sleep apnoea.

I work outside and have done so most of my life. I don't seem to have any problems whatever the temperature or humidity. I worked in minus six last winter when a frost started about 5 pm one night and found I could breath a bit better than I did during the day. I know, I'm just odd !
The weather certainly affects me I'm so tired the last couple of weeks, I'm getting out of breath much easier that I did in the summer months.

I have noticed this time of yr I wake up in the night oughing if the temp ha dropped ,so I get up and put the heating on
Our bodies have to work hard to keep warm and this on top of working hard because of our breathing ....its easy to see why we get so tired. I dont expect as much of myself and try to achieve something each day so I move about. Seems to work for me.
