Hi poppy,
i was diagnose with moderate copd in august of this year, and have just been declared
unfit for work by occupational health, and i have now put in a claim for DLA, but now i just
how to wait,
i think anybody with an illness can make a claim, but sometimes the claim is turned down
but theres no harm in trying,

Thanks very much,i'l give it a go.

I am moderate but don't claim it as COPD doesn't stop me doing anything I have always done before, including working. It can be claimed by people who work too, of course.

Hi Poppy - I claimed DLA because I wanted to work PT and needed the lower moblity part to do so. My claim was turned down but people are successful so do claim and it cost nothing to try.
My advice would be get help from CAB or BLF ect - because as I have since going to the CAB ect - I have found out I did not answer the questions in the best possible way - as being by nature posiive I tend to focus on what I can do - rather than what I can't !
Good Luck BB
When I had moderate copd, I have very severe now, I was working, and although there were times when things were more challenging, did not consider myself disabled. You are not awarded DLA for being ill, or for any type of illness, unless terminal and you are expected to die within six months. You are awarded depending on how your illness effects you. As said I get severely out of breath dressing, bathing, going up stairs, any kind of slope, cannot do my own shoe laces, or cut my own toe nails. Walking drops my sats, without oxygen to the very low 80's or sometimes 70's and is at best uncomfortable and slow meaning I now use a scooter. I now use oxygen to keep the sats up. That is disabled. Amazing how many people think that a diagnoses of an illness will entitle them to DLA. I would pay a kings ransom to get better and not claim DLA. It is only for the most severest of disabilities.
I was working but had to give up due to how to my illness affected me.I spent the last 20 years nursing the elderly and loved every minute of it,i wish i still could.I suffer most of what you describe but maybe not as severely as you.I thought this was a forum where we could all help oneanother i was obviously wrong, but thankyou for your input it has taught me a valuable lesson.
I had the same question as the poster, after being told to apply by several friends and relatives, and thinking it was a waste of time, but I filled in the forms.
I am housebound, chronic pain, cant make it alone to the loo, cant bend over or I fall (age 47) I was already receiving incapacity benefit for the illness, as I had gone through pneumonia,TB, then Low COPD when I applied.
I was given full high rate of everything. It was a life saver, enabling me to get a car from motability, making my life SO much better.
So, Id advise trying, if you do get it, you know you are in the right and do deserve DLA, as its hard to get and only people who should get help does get the help..
the one thing id say is always get help to fill the forms as most ppl fil them out wrong we did and had to try agian and agian till a benifits person fill them for us now we get dla and mobility seams they at first turn you down hopping you will give up trying so keep trying
It is poppy. But sometimes a truthful answer just is not what you want to hear.
